  The Lancelets (Subphylum Cephalochotdata)
The Cephalochordata are a small subphylum (about 28 species) of of small, 5 to 10 centimetres long, but fascinating animals.
The Cephalochordata are filter feeders, like the Urochordates, with most of the body being occupied by the large pharynx which exists within the atrial cavity.
The Cephalochordata represent a very primitive example of the basic Chordate plan, and in some ways resemble what scientists think the original ancestor to the vertebrates may have looked like.

  Lancelet Summary
The lancelets (subphylum Cephalochordata, and traditionally known as the amphioxus) are a group of primitive chordates.
Cephalochordata is traditionally seen as a sister subphylum to the vertebrates, and are grouped together as a sister group (sometimes called notochordata) to the simpler still urochordates.
It is the urochordates who are the sister group of the vertebrates, while cephalochordata is the most original and primitive subhylum of the chordates.

There are only around 25 species of Cephalochordata.
Still, they are so unique that they claim a Subphylum for themselves.
The notochord itself provides some rigidity, which allows the muscles on one side to contract, while the others stretch.

Invertebrate - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Since invertebrates include all animals except a certain group, invertebrates form a paraphyletic group.
(For a full list of animals considered to be invertebrates, see animal.) All the listed phyla are invertebrates along with two of the three subphyla in Phylum Chordata: Urochordata and Cephalochordata.
These two, plus all the other known invertebrates, have only one cluster of Hox genes, while the vertebrates have duplicated their original cluster more than once.

 Chordata - CreationWiki
The phylum Cordata has three subphyla: Cephalochordata (lancelts); Urochordata (Sea squirts, Tunicates, Salpa, Lancelets); and Vertebrata (fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds, and mammals).
In most vertebrates, the dorsal hollow nerve cord becomes surrounded with cartilaginous or bony vertebrae, and the notochord generally reduced.
The subphylum Cephalochordata has some characteristics of vertebrates and invertebrates.

The subphylum Cephalochordata is a small group that includes the well-known amphioxus (Branchiostoma).
An amphioxus is pointed at both ends and is practically all trunk and tail.
Evidence from DNA sequences suggests that the Cephalochordata are the "sister group" (nearest evolutionary relative) of the chordates and are next most closely related to the urochordates.

Metaphylogeny of 82 gene families sheds a new light on chordate evolution [Abstract]
It was also the case for agnathans species –myxines and hagfish– for which phylogenetic evidence was recently given for a controversial monophyly.
In the present work, we analyzed 82 protein families presenting homologs between urochordata and other deuterostomes and focused on two points: 1) testing accurately the position of urochordata and cephalochordata phyla in regard with vertebrates as well as chordates monophyly, 2) performing an estimation of the rate of gene loss in the Ciona intestinalis genome.
We showed that the urochordate phyla is the vertebrate sister group and that gene loss played a major role in structuring the urochordate genome.

Chordate Classification consists of three subphyla: Urochordata, Cephalochordata, and Vertebrata.
Gradually, there was less reliance on gills and more on lungs and the circulatory system (heart, blood vessels), which work in connection.
The Vertebrates are discussed by class and you should return to the previous page to continue examining them.

Major differences in adult body plan between Cephalochordata + Vertebrata (myotomes) and Urochordata (tunic) are marked.
These results, combined with morphological data, suggest that Chordata should be restricted to Cephalochordata + Vertebrata and that Urochordata is an independent phylum and the sister group to Chordata.
