CEPHALOPODA - LoveToKnow Article on CEPHALOPODA   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-08)
The Cephalopoda are mainly characterized by the con.crescence of the foot and head.
The males of nearly all Cephalopoda have been shown to be characterized by a peculiar modification of the arm-like processes or lobes of the fore-foot, connected with the copulative function.
The Cephalopoda are divisible into two orders, Tetrabranchiata and Dibranchiata, the names of which (due to Sir R. Owen) lescribe the number of gill-plumes present; but is fact there are several characters, of as great importance as those derived from the gills, by which the members of these two orders are separated From one another.

Palaeos Invertebrates: Mollusca: Cephalopoda: The Cephalopods   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-08)
The name Cephalopoda literally means "head feet" and refers to the fact that these animals have a foot (actually a cluster of tentacles) directly abutting their head.
The class Cephalopoda has been traditionally divided into three subclasses on the basis of shell structure, or two subclasses on the basis of gills and other soft parts.
The trouble with this scheme is that it is impossible to know from the fossil shells alone whether all the extinct forms had two or four gills, or anything really much about their soft body structure.

is the organ the cephalopoda uses for locomotion.
There is no larval stage in the cephalopoda life cycle because the adults are mobile, and the whole purpose of the larvae stage is to move the young away from the adults for creatures that are immobile.
