  ADW: Cercopithecus mitis: Information
Cercopithecus mitis is found in rain forests of central, eastern, and southern Africa.
Cercopithecus mitis is also known as the diademed monkey because it has a prominent row of forward pointing white fur just above its brow line (Rudran, 1978).
Cercopithecus mitis tends to be a social species with group sizes ranging from 10 to 40 individuals.

Babies have a yellow band which is formed by the deep yellow coloration of the tip of the hair above the eyebrow, with the face a sallow flesh colour.
The Vervet Monkey, Cercopithecus Aethiops, has a pale turquoise blue skin.
Scientists confirmed during 1976 that the skin coloration was due to deep dermal deposition of melanin in melanocytes accounting for the blue coloration.

The analysis of data from infants of STLV-I+ mothers showed that seroconversion had occurred in 1 of 3 cases, suggesting that vertical transmission of the STLV-I virus is not an inevitable consequence for infants of seropositive mothers.

Several studies have demonstrated that non-human primates may be carriers of human gastrointestinal parasites6, ectoparasites5 and bacteria12; so that people living in close proximity of such animals or individuals working in game parks, animal orphanages or research stations may be at risk of acquiring pathogens from infected animals.
The African green monkey, Cercopithecus aethiops sabaeus reached the Caribbean from West Africa in the mid-17 century2.
In their study of parasites of Cercopithecus neglectus in Kenya, KARERE & MUNENE6 noted that infections with Strongyloides were higher in female adults than in juveniles.

Simian immunodeficiency virus (SIV) from sun-tailed monkeys (Cercopithecus solatus): evidence for host-dependent evolution of SIV within the C. lhoesti superspecies.
Recently we reported the characterization of simian immunodeficiency virus (SIVlhoest) from a central African l'hoest monkey (Cercopithecus lhoesti lhoesti) that revealed a distant relationship to SIV isolated from a mandrill (SIVmnd).
The present report describes a novel SIV (SIVsun) isolated from a healthy, wild-caught sun-tailed monkey (Cercopithecus lhoesti solatus), another member of the l'hoest superspecies.

7th Conference - Abstract 223   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-03)
Since DeBrazza and Sykes’ monkeys are both members of the genus Cercopithecus, these data suggested that their virus had evolved in a host-dependent fashion.
These studies revealed that the lhoesti group of monkeys (L’hoest’s, Preuss’s and Sun-tailed monkeys) formed a lineage roughly equidistant from other Cercopithecus and Chlorocebus species, thus providing an explanation for the independent phylogenetic position of their viruses.
We have recently characterized SIVs from Blue (Cercopithecus mitis) and mona (Cercopithecus mona) monkeys, and partial sequence analyses are consistent with this hypothesis.
