Cerebus the Aardvark - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Cerebus the Aardvark (or simply Cerebus) was an ambitious monthly independent comic book begun by Canadian artist Dave Sim in 1977, and running for 300 issues and 6,000 pages, through March 2004.
Cerebus and Jaka continue their journey towards Sand Hills Creek, in the company of Ham and Mary Earnestway, characters based upon Ernest Hemingway and his fourth wife, Mary.
Their subsequent conversation shatters Cerebus' last illusions about his son, who is planning to have himself cloned with a lion's body, marry his mother, and rule Egypt as the god Harmaclus.

Graphic novel review - Cerebus - Sim
Cerebus the Aardvark is an institution in comics.
Despite referring to himself in the third person, Cerebus is a shrewd cookie, who only fails in his aim of earning enough money to get and stay unhealthily drunk due to his reliance on, and interest in, the incredible array of idiots he manages to surround himself with.
The look of Cerebus is developed early in the book, with the extra-long snout of the first few issues soon disappearing, giving Cerebus a 'cuter' look that sits uneasily (if comically) with his strength and ferocity.

 CEREBUS
Cerebus becomes a houseguest of Jaka, the one true love of his life, who long ago gave up on him and is now married to Rick.
Cerebus was relatively inactive in Jaka's Story, but he's positively catatonic through most of this book, which revolves around the circumstances surrounding the death of Oscar Wilde, one of the many real celebrities Sim has "borrowed" for his tale.
Cerebus, who has been sitting on a chair at a tavern through almost all of Melmoth, and fairly sedentary since the end of Church and State, takes flight, metaphorically and literally.

The fact that Cerebus is an aardvark and everybody else is human, although never mentioned, is just one small thing (although Cerebus is described from time to time as anything from a short midget to a guy wearing a bunny's costume).
Cerebus' campaign for power eventually wins him the title of Pope of the Eastern Church of Tarim, which in turn leads to a power struggle and eventually a radical power shift from men (Kelvinist) to women (Cirinist) being in control.
When all is said and done, Cerebus embodies the notion that "absolute power corrupts absolutely." The more powerful he becomes, the more insane he becomes until finally he is brought before The Judge—a being of intense power (though his greatest power is observation)—to prevent the destruction of the entire world through Cerebus' greed.

Basically, Cerebus was the baddest aardvark ever to wield a sword and attempt the Great Ascension, and it's all thanks to Dave Sim's twenty-six years of toil.
Although it lost focus in the last 100 issues or so, (Cerebus spent about twenty-five issues stinking drunk in the same bar, but that still beats the screenplay weirdness of Latter Days), the tale of the Earth-Pig Born through High Society, Church and State, and Mothers & Daughters was one for the ages.
From King Julius to Astoria to Elrod the Albino to the mercurial Roach, Sim wove a cast of characters unrivaled in comicdom.

But the pathos of her parting with Cerebus, who has forgotten her once he sobers up, suggested for the first time there could be some pathos in these tales.
I definitely think that there was a point where "Cerebus," in the current vernacular, "jumped the shark," but before that point (which I hope to pinpoint as I reread all 300 issues) there was a period of time when this comic book was as the one I most looked forward to reading each month.

To the extent that the world has a fixed identity, it is not a suitable implement for Sim's efforts at providing Cerebus a moral eduction, and to the extent that it is the setting for this schooling, it cannot have too firm an identity of its own.
He responded to criticisms of Cerebus' views in Church and State by saying that there was no objective way to prove doctrines like papal infallibility wrong, and that therefore (I'm paraphrasing here) readers who found them distasteful were just being wimps.

A recent plot development in the comic book turned on the fact that Cerebus felt that he had been dishonoured because he had not been present at the death of his father but had, instead, been with his lover, Jaka.
It is perfectly consistent that Cerebus, who has always been represented as a ‘wild man’ or ‘barbarian’ would indeed think this.
Cerebus lover, Jaka, has had to mutate from being one of the most truly ‘good’ characters in the story to a ‘spoiled, myopic, insensitive, self-absorbed, and self important harlot princess’ in order to make the point that no real man would ever want to marry a woman.
