The Ceremonial Guard is an ad hoc military unit in the Canadian Armed Forces with elements drawn from two militia regiments of Foot Guards: The Governor General's Foot Guards from Ottawa and the Canadian Grenadier Guards from Montreal.
The Changing of the Guard is a parade representing the changing of the guards posted at Rideau Hall, the official residence of the Governor General of Canada.
The old guard marches to the west side of the east lawn and faces the east block, while the new guard marches to the east side of the lawn and faces west towards the old guard.

 The Ceremonial Guard
The Ceremonial Guard was established by the Canadian Forces to plan and prepare, and execute Public Duties in the Nation's Capital during the summer.
The Ceremonial Guard performs Public Duties in Ottawa beginning in late June to the end of August annually with military training beginning in early May. The first parade is generally conducted the Friday prior to Canada Day and the final parade on the last Sunday in August.
The Ceremonial Guard provided a Guard of Honour for the funeral of the British High Commissioner to Antigua and Barbados (1991) and provided members for the funeral for Roland Mitchener, former Governor General and Colonel of the Regiments in Ottawa (1991), and Jeanne Sauve, former Governor General and Colonel of the Regiments in Montreal (1992).

The Ceremonial Guard was a composite of companies from the Governor General’s Foot Guards and Montreal's Canadian Grenadier Guards, from 1981 the Band of the Ceremonial Guard, and a Headquarters Company (which provided supply, transportation, training, administrative and medical support).
The Ceremonial Guard was originally quartered at Wallace House, messing at Rockcliffe and Uplands, though after the closing of bases in Ottawa the CG moved to Carleton University.
The first Guard at Government House and ceremony on Parliament Hill was mounted on 2 July 1959 by the 1st Battalion The Canadian Guards following the Household Guard which had been mounted for Her Majesty the Queen in June 1959.
