At precisely 21.53 the Chief Yeoman Warder, carrying the Keys of the Tower in one hand and a brass lantern in the other, collects his escort from the main body of the guard on duty within the Tower and proceeds to the entrance to secure the heavy wooden gates.
The earliest known reference to the ceremony is contained in Regulations for the Officers and Servants Civil and Military which was issued by Mary Tudor on 12th October 1555.

Ceremonies known as the Ceremony of the Keys are held in at least three locations in the United Kingdom : London, Gibraltar, and Edinburgh.
The ceremony was reinstituted in 1933 and is currently performed twice a year (in April and October) by the Royal Gibraltar Regiment and resident British Battalions.

But the Ceremony of the Keys is a different kettle of fish - it is short, atmospheric, totally uncrowded, and makes you feel sort of special being inside the Tower at night, even if it is only for a few minutes.
We've seen all three ceremonies and have been disappointed in both of the Changing of the Guards (especially at Buckingham Palace.) I would highly recommend the Ceremony of the Keys over either of the guard changes.
The Ceremony of the Keys is also my favorite but you do have to request tickets in advance.
