  Ceres
Named after the Roman Goddess of Fruitfulness, Ceres village was founded in 1849 when, after the completion of Michell's Pass, the first plots of land were sold.
The village lies 150 km to the North-East of Cape Town and after the discovery of diamonds in the interior in 1869, the road through Ceres became the main route to the North.
It is situated 9 km north of Ceres and 160 km from Cape Town.

As previously told, I came to S. Africa in order to take part in a benthic fisheries survey with the RV "Africana", and I am most grateful to the Fisheries Research Institute of S. Africa for this opportunity.
After Ceres the area became progressively drier, and we entered the Karoo proper, a mostly flattish region of low, often thorny bushes, now clearly in the quiescent mode of the dry summers here -- rain, when it falls, comes mainly in winter in the Karoo.
