Cermet - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Cermet is an abbreviation for "'ceramic" and "metal." A CerMet is a composite material composed of ceramic (cer) and metallic (met) materials.
A Cermet is ideally designed to have the optimal properties of both a ceramic, such as high temperature resistance and hardness, and those of a metal, such as the ability to undergo plastic deformation.
Cermets are also used in dentistry as a material for fillings and prostheses.

Solar Absorptance of Cermet Coatings Evaluated
Cermet coatings, molecular mixtures of metal and ceramic, are being considered for the heat inlet surface of solar Stirling convertors.
Cermet coatings are manufactured utilizing sputter deposition, and many different metal and ceramic combinations can be created.
The cermet coatings are typically 250 nm thick, and they are purposely made to be metal rich at the substrate-coating interface and ceramic rich at the surface, with the composition of metal and ceramic changing through the thickness of the coating.

Once the Cermet tube is covered with molten glass it is retracted back into the passage until the glass solidifies forming a air tight seal which protects all the Moly components from oxidation thus no additional cooling is required.
The Cermet bubbler tube is made of high purity (Molybdenumdisiliside) which is stable in the molten glass to temperatures of 2800° F. The material will not dissolve or add any impurities or color to the molten glass.
Cermet bubbler tubes are available in many common sizes as well as special diameters and lengths with varying flow characteristic.

 Feature - Cermets Get Assertive - 01/06
While cermets of the past were more uniformly vulnerable to impacts and thermal shocks, cermet inserts today are tougher—some of them offering flexural strength equal to that of P15 carbide.
The word cermet is a contraction of “ceramic” and “metal.” A cermet consists of a ceramic material (such as titanium carbide or titanium carbonitride) cemented with a metal binder.
Cermets today are tougher than they once were, but their toughness still does not match that of the toughest carbides.

 Grinding Cermet Tipped Saws
Cermet is comprised of non-metallic refractory compounds (carbides and nitrides) and metallic binders namely Cobalt and Nickel (metals) hence the name Cermet.
In grinding cermet it has been found that when the grinding pressures go up the surface finish goes down due to heat and impact on both the grinding wheel and on the Cermet being ground.
When the grinding pressures go up the surface finish goes down due to chipping and subsurface damage which is difficult to detect and can have an adverse effect on the performance of the tool and the tool life.

If I were forced to choose, I'd select the Cermet blade but picking one or the other would have been splitting hairs to me. In any case, using these blades to cut out the parts for the MDF boxes was a cinch.
After a week of busting up panel stock and before giving these blades back to Ken, I made two final cuts in melamine thinking maybe the condition of the bottom edge might be a clue as to which was really the sharpest or more durable blade.
The special techniques required for cermets are basically attention to speeds and feeds as well as temperatures and coolant cleanliness.
