The Cerro Azul-Cerro Jefe region (Map 30) is in the Province of Panama c.
The Cerro Azul-Cerro Jefe uplift is on the continental divide and the source of rivers flowing to both oceans on the Pacific slope, including the Pacora, Tocumen and Juan Díaz rivers; on the Caribbean slope, including several rivers of the Chagres watershed which supplies major reservoirs.
The forest on the summit of Cerro Jefe (pictures) is influenced by frequent strong winds, having a vegetation of shrubby trees, generally 8-15 m tall with medium-sized to small leathery leaves; it shows a tendency towards sclerophylly (Gentry 1982).

Today the area around Cerro Jefe is sparsely populated and the few people who walk on the trails leading out of the hills and jungle come to the small town of Cerro Azul to buy supplies and then immediately head back to their homes in the deep jungle.
To reach Cerro Jefe you take the highway that leads to the airport, but rather than turning in at the airport exit you head straight; after about 15 minutes you reach an intersection known as the 24th of December (many intersections in Panama are given dates).
The road up to Cerro Azul and Cerro Jefe was built from what I understand after WWII and was economically important because the Melo Corporation set up chicken farms along the road leading to Cerro Azul.

Steep-sided 3788-m-high Cerro Azul has a 500-m-wide summit crater that is open to the north.
Quizapu, a major vent on the northern flank of Cerro Azul, formed in 1846 during the first historical eruption at Cerro Azul, accompanied by the emission of voluminous dacitic lava flows that traveled both east into the Estero Barroso valley and west into the Río Blanquillo valley.
Quizapu was later the source of one of the world's largest explosive eruptions of the 20th century in 1932, which created a 600-700 m wide, 150-m-deep crater and ejected 9.5 cu km of dacitic tephra.

It is composed of the meat extracted from the dorsal part of the dolphin and served as an appetizer.
The commercialization of small cetaceans increased in the early eighties and 5 species (dusky dolphin, burmeisters porpoise, common dolphin, the bottlenose dolphin and pilot whale) were being openly fished.
However, recent investigations of Mundo Azul have proved that there is still a ongoing trade on dolphin meat and a fl market in restaurants and local fish-markets (see pictures beyond).

Cerro Azul last erupted in 1979 and has spewed lava at least 9 times in known memory.
Initially, the main threat to the Cerro Azul tortoises was thought to be the possible inundation of the important San Pedro tortoise nesting site with lava.

10/06/98 The BBC reported today that a total of 11 Galápagos tortoises have been airlifted out of the path of lava flowing from the erupting Cerro Azul volcano and plans are afoot to move a further 14 tortoises.
The total number of tortoises living on the Cerro Azul volcano is in the hundreds, but most of them are considered to be well away from danger.
Geochelone nigra vicina is considered relatively safe, being widely distributed on Cerro Azul, many more remain in the wild, and they are already well represented in the captive breeding and restoration program of the Galápagos National Park Service and the Charles Darwin Research Station.

Anybody that has been to cerro azul on an OK day and has caught a wave has got to frikin love this place.
Cerro Azul is a place beyond compare, nobody can doubt that, great surf, great people, great food, only missing great girls.
I went to Cerro Azul six months ago and im going back six months from now, if anybody is planning a surf trip through South America, Cerro Azul should definetely be a stop, also think about punta rocas and chicama(longest wave in the world)
