  About Cerro Paranal
The Paranal Observatory is located on the top of Cerro Paranal in the Atacama Desert in the northern part of Chile (map) and what is believed to be the driest area on Earth.
Cerro Paranal is a 2,635-m high mountain, about 120 km south of the town of Antofagasta and 12 km inland from the Pacific Coast.
25' W. The Paranal mountain was chosen because of its excellent atmospheric conditions and, not the least, its remoteness.

Cerro La Silla, Chile - The light gathered by the 3.6-meter telescope atop this parched mountaintop has traveled so far it may be the faint signature of a star that no longer exists.
The telescopes at Cerro Paranal will be cooled by three, 23XL screw chillers manufactured in Syracuse, N.Y. Besides their efficiency, the screw chillers also were chosen because of their low vibration levels.
Both Cerro La Silla and Cerro Paranal are operated by a consortium of European nations under the umbrella of the European Organization for Astronomy.

 ESO - Telescopes and Instrumentation
The Very Large Telescope (VLT) at Cerro Paranal is ESO's premier site for observations in the visible and infrared light.
In addition to the 8.2m diamter telescopes the VLTI is complemented with four Auxiliary Telescopes (AT) of 1.8m diameter to improve its imaging capabilities and enable full nighttime use on a year-round basis.
Two telescopes for imaging surveys are also under construction for Paranal, the VLT Survey Telescope (VST, 2.6m diameter) for the visible, and the Visible and Infrared Survey Telescope for Astronomy (VISTA, 4m).

Extremely Large Telescope could reveal secrets of life, the universe and everything | Science | Guardian Unlimited
Now, a few decades later, astronomers have caught up, choosing that number as the diameter - in metres - of a proposed new telescope that will uncover how the universe evolved in its earliest years and could reveal whether life exists anywhere else in the cosmos.
It could be used to address mysteries such as what the first objects in the universe were, how many types of matter exist and whether there are any other Earth-like planets in our galaxy.
The sharpest eye that astronomers have on the universe today is Eso's Very Large Telescope (VLT), a €500m array of four 8 metre-diameter telescopes that sit on the 2,500-metre high peak of Cerro Paranal.

For one establishment situated on Cerro Paranal, a mountain in the Atacama Desert of the Chilean Andes, the word 'hotel' is something of a misnomer, as it is closed to the general public.
Surrounding cliffs act as a support wall, although they do nothing to impede the breathtaking views of the ocean, especially from the dining wall balcony.
This emphasis on reflecting nature sets the hotel in direct and deliberate contrast to the high-tech telescope complex atop Cerro Paranal's summit.

VISTA will perform the deepest ever large area surveys of the southern sky, producing atlases of hundreds of millions of celestial objects, from the nearest stars to galaxies at the edge of the universe.
'The Paranal mountain offers excellent atmospheric conditions and, because it is so remote, the skies are free of light pollution.' said Jim Emerson of Queen Mary and Westfield College, leader of the 18 University VISTA consortia.

The VLT is located on the flattened peak of Cerro Paranal, a 2,635m-high mountain in the Atacama Desert, one of the driest places on Earth - 50 times drier than California's Death Valley.
It is dry and sterile enough that the Atacama has been used as an analogue for Mars in Nasa studies, but even so, around 120 astronomers, engineers and support staff work here at a time.
Modern observatories go to where the stars are, and Paranal's high-altitude, low-humidity and extreme remoteness give it some of the clearest skies in the world.
