The orebody at the Cerro de Pasco mine is estimated to have contained a total of 100 million tons of pyrite, 4 million tons of zinc, 2 million tons of lead (Petersen, 1965), in excess of 1 million tons of copper, 10 thousand tons of silver, and lesser amounts of gold and bismuth.
The Cerro de Pasco orebody is associated with a Tertiary volcanic vent which is located in the core of a broad, northplunging anticline composed of highly contorted shales, phyllites and quartzites belonging to the Devonian Excelsior Group (McLaughlin, 1924; Jenks, 1951).
Cerro de Pasco was noted for having fine specimens during the first half of this century, but only a few of them made their way into museums and private collections.

In the area around Cerro de Pasco, where this project was based, people's herding lifestyle has undergone great change, principally as a result of Peru's most important industry: mining.
While it has brought employment and some infrastructure to the region, the industry paid scant regard to the environmental impact of its activities: waste from the mines seeped into the water supply, and polluted the springs which run through the pastures; lakes once famous for fish and birdlife are discoloured, empty and their surroundings silent.
The impact of the mining industry on Cerro de Pasco and the surrounding communities underlies most narrators' stories, which were gathered in 1995.

Thanks to this growth, the town of Cerro de Pasco was formed, receiving in 1639 the title of "Royal City of Mines" by decision of King Phillip IV of Spain and, in 1771, under Viceroy Manuel Amat y Juniet, that of "Mining Town of Cerro de Pasco".
That was one of the tasks entrusted to the Cerro de Pasco Commission, chaired by Marco Aurelio Denegri.
