Certaldo, che dal primo rilevamento demografico ha costantemente visto la sua popolazione in crescita, contava 2.502 abitanti nel 1551, 3.133 nel 1745, 4.991 nel 1830, 7.779 nel 1881, 11.769 nel 1936, 11.919 nel 1951, 13.408 nel 1961, 15.614 nel 1971 e 15.913 nel 1981.
Drappo partito di bianco e di rosso, riccamente ornato di ricami d'argento e caricato dello stemma comunale, con l'iscrizione centrata in argento: «Comune di Certaldo» (Decreto del Presidente della Repubblica in data lo aprile 1954).
A metà del secolo scorso, il gonfaloniere di Certaldo ritenne lo stemma comunale, nel quale campeggiava una cipolla rossa su fondo bianco, poco adeguato a rappresentare una comunità in fase d'espansione.
