General Dilodilo identified a certain Second Lieutenant Latay of the 50th Infantry Battalion based in Guimod Norte, San Juan, Ilocos Sur as the leader of three teams of soldiers deployed to secure the pass for the anniversary celebrations which was to have been attended by foreign dignitaries.
Cervantes, Ilocos Sur Mayor Rufino Amilao gave this statement as he recounted the bloody ambuscade staged Monday afternoon by suspected New People’s Army rebels that killed nine Army soldiers and wounded several others.

Initial report from the AFP North Luzon Command said that a 16-man NPA rebels were sighted in sitio Illungan, barangay Malaya in Ilocos Sur conducting their alleged extortion activities and recruiting villagers, including minors, to join the underground movement.
Elmer Quiros, group commander of the AFP Civil Relations Service for the Ilocos and Cordillera regions, reported that sightings of NPA were reported in Barangay San Luis of the same town purportedly for a medical mission but that this was only a ploy after the rebels allegedly started extorting from the villagers.
