 RTE.ie Entertainment - Cerys Matthews - Cockahoop
While the often-underrated Catatonia made guitar-based indie pop, marking their place in history with a handful of radio hits, Matthew's debut solo album shows a new departure for the Welshwoman and a penchant for all things country.
Matthews has assembled a band of Nashville musicians and her rich, guttural voice - one of the most distinctive in the business - lends itself nicely to the backdrop of slide guitars and banjo.

To the delight of her former band's fans and aficionados of a distinctive voice box alike, Cerys is back with Cockahoop, her debut solo record recorded in the environs of Nashville.
And from the choice of opening track Chardonnay, Cerys doesn't shy away from her past but embraces it and turns it into a positive, rough-hewn thing to put a smile on the face of even the hardest cynic.

 HYBRIDMAGAZINE.COM | MUSIC | Cerys Matthews
A self-described "collector of songs," Matthews had stockpiled more than 70 traditional folk tunes before and during her tenure in Catatonia, many of them dating from the 15th and 16th centuries.
He urged her to pen new material as a balance to the old, and the result was seven original songs written or co-written by Matthews, including the goofily tuneful "If You're Lookin' For Love" and "Caught in the Middle," which boasts horns and a groovy bass line.
It was a hard-earned break for a woman whose scrappy rise to fame and subsequent downfall -- she quit Catatonia in 2001 and checked into rehab for drinking and bulimia -- were graphically documented in the British tabloids.

Norwich Tonight (UK) : 02/10/2006 - Cerys Matthews
Cerys Matthews (pronounced 'Kerris') (born April 11, 1969 in Cardiff, Wales, UK) is a Welsh singer and songwriter, perhaps best known as the lead singer of Welsh rock band Catatonia from 1992 to 2001.
The band Catatonia was formed in 1992, reputedly after Roberts heard Cerys busking in a street in Cardiff city centre (this later turned out to be a story fabricated by the band's press officer, as Cerys had known Mark for some time, although they did often go busking).
Matthews moved to Nashville in early summer 2002 in search of a new beginning after she received telephone calls from industry legends Bob Dylan and Cat Stevens urging her to kick the drugs and get herself sorted out.

Boozy former demons are beaten to death with acoustic instruments--"Chardonnay", a song penned (but never recorded) by Roger Cook and former Strangler Hugh Cornwell, seems to jolly along in summer straw boaters with its clockwork banjo and village band woodwind--but the songs' appreciative narrative disguises contempt for her former dependencies.
Along with the ragged vocal swagger of growly slacker-folk number "The Good in Goodbye"--on which Matthews spits-feathers and approximates the inebriated slurring of a female Shane Macgowan--it succeeds in sticking two fingers up in the general direction of the past.
Cerys' has been very brave in making an album that goes against the trends of the moment, and thats what makes this album very cool, because its different.

Cerys Matthews - Welsh singer - Brief Article - Interview Interview - Find Articles
A champagne cork shoots high and fast through the blond decor of the Four Seasons Hotel in New York City, aimed by an expert thumb-flip from Cerys Matthews, the notorious Welsh party girl and flamboyant lead singer of the band Catatonia.
Endearingly enthusiastic, she's all energy, flinging her feet in devilish, spiky red ankle boots over the arm of a chair, imperiously waving hands accented by Jade Jagger beads as she sends the champagne back to room service and demands a less vinegary vintage.
In Britain's increasingly "laddish" culture, Cerys has carved out a unique niche: the girl who's one of the lads down at the pub but still a feline, husky-voiced female whom men want and whom women like.

Former Catatonia chanteuse Cerys Matthews' second album continues to re-establish her as a leading light of the nu-folk scene, this time winning over the organic audiences who may consider her too plugged in by hanging on dearly to a near-obsession with the weather.
In fact, what comes across most strongly is how well Matthews has managed to blend the kind of playful leftfield pop on which she made her name with the best musical heritage of her new Nashville home, used to best effect in the traditional Grand Ole Opry stylings and sensibilities of What Kind Of Man.
In perfect contrast to this is Cerys at her most shiny, delivering Monkees melodies on Morning Sunshine, although ironically it's here you'll find the darkest lyrics - "I'd like to see you crawling from the shadows" - using the idea of the sunshine to remind us that it's always darkest before the dawn.
