  FlightSim.Com Review: Flight1 Cessna 177
At the time of the 177 launch, few could have conceived that the aircraft it was designed to replace would prove to be the most successful light plane in history, outselling its new rival by a factor of ten to one.
It was the right decision; in the final analysis the 177 sat in an awkward slot between two absolutely classic designs and it was the one single the company built during that period that wasn't the sales leader in its class.
The Flyers own three aircraft; a Cessna 152, Cessna 182, and the Cessna 177, which is their most popular plane; once you have looked at the avionics fit, you will understand why.

Cessna 172 from Fiddlers Green- an easy to build Card Model
Cessna expected the new 172 to have only limited success, in view of the release of the Cessna 177 Cardinal at the same time.
The 172 was designed to replace the Cessna 170, which used conventional (tailwheel) gear instead of tricycle (nosewheel) gear.
The Skyhawk is part of a large family of high-wing, tricycle-gear, single-engine Cessna planes, ranging from the two-seater 150/152 (no longer in production) to the more powerful 182 Cessna Skylane, the six-seat 206 Cessna Stationair, and the enormous fourteen-seat turboprop Cessna Caravan, along with several other models no longer produced.

FLYER Air Portal - Flight Tests - Cessna Cardinal 177RG
Cessna struggled on with horsepower upgrades to 180 in 1969, followed by a constant prop in 1970 and then a retractable gear version in 1971 with a 200hp engine (as in the subject of this review).
Cessna at that time (and even today with the reintroduction of the 172) had no light retractables to compete with the Piper Arrow or the Mooney and Beech ranges.
Cessna did the business with the 177, particularly the RG version, which is a vast improvement over the Cessna 172RG Cutlass, which we reviewed in May 1997.

 Cessna 177 - Definition, explanation
The Cessna 177 Cardinal is a light high-wing general aviation aircraft that was intended to complement and later replace the Cessna 172, first announced in 1967.
The final revision to the 177 line was the retractable-gear 177RG, which Cessna began producing in 1971.
While not a failure, the 177 was not a success by Cessna's standards, and both the 177B and 177RG ceased production in 1978.

The Cessna 177 Cardinal is a light, high-wing general aviation aircraft that was intended to complement and later replace Cessna's 172 Skyhawk.
Unfortunately the 177 was underpowered and suffered from other problems, such as a dangerous tendency for the tail to stall.
In the film the early-model 177 is shown flying from a mountain airstrip with four occupants and a heavy fuel load, a mission the 150 hp version was unable to carry-out due to its lack of power.

 Cesnna 172 – Reliable 4 Seat Aircraft -172
Cessna thought it would quickly overtake the popularity of the Cessna 172, given that the 177 Cardinal combined Cessna's highly regarded reliability with modern good looks and a contemporary feel.
The Cessna 172 continued to outsell the 177 Cardinal by a wide margin and finally ended up outliving the Cardinal too.
As a result, the Cessna 172N was fitted with a Lycoming O-320-H, which increased the horsepower to 160.

If you're like most of us, the Cessna 150 or 172 is a familiar reference point, as well as a common plane from which to step up to a Cardinal.
With this added drag the rest of the pattern is standard Cessna, with the normal light elevator feel restored at the lower speed.
Cessna improved the gear in several stages between 1971 and 1975, and they all work, but at times there can be, well, complications.

 Airliners.net: Cessna 177 Cardinal
The Cessna 177 (Cardinal for the Deluxe option) was developed in the mid 1960s as an all new replacement for the ubiquitous 172 family.
Announced in late 1967, this new aircraft featured a wide and fairly spacious cabin, a rear set flush riveted high wing which offered good visibility in turns, a single piece all moving tailplane, a high level of standard equipment and the 110kW (150hp) O-320-E recently installed on the 172 driving a fixed pitch prop.
While not a failure, the 177 failed to attract anywhere near the sales volume of the 172 (in its first full year - 1968 - 601 were built, about half the number of 172s built that year).

AVSIM REVIEW OF DREAMFLEET CESSNA 177B/177RG CARDINAL
Introduced in 1968, the sleek, roomy Cessna 177 Cardinal was intended as a replacement for the venerable Cessna 172, the most popular single-engine aircraft in the world.
The 177 looked fast just sitting on the ground, and unlike other Cessnas, the Cardinal featured an effective all-flying horizontal stabilator, as introduced on the Piper Cherokee line of aircraft several years earlier.
Real-life Cessna Cardinals use the Lycoming O-360-A1F6 engine (an engine I am very accustomed to using in real life), a powerful little 4-cylinder engine that puts out a pretty distinct noise.

The 177 comes in both fixed or retractable gear versions, and despite the complexities a retracting gear brings, this is the most numerous version.
