Cessna 170 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Cessna 170 is a light, single-engine, general aviation aircraft that was produced by the Cessna Aircraft Company between 1948 and 1956.
The earliest Cessna 170s were essentially four-seat versions of the popular Cessna 140 two-seater, equipped with a more powerful Continental O-300 145 hp engine and additional fuel tanks.
In 1956 Cessna introduced a replacement for the Cessna 170 that was essentially a nose-wheel-equipped 170B with a square fin, designated the Cessna 172 Skyhawk.

Cessna 172 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Cessna 172 Skyhawk is a four-seat, single-engine, high-wing airplane.
The 172 is a direct descendant of the Cessna 170, which has conventional landing gear instead of the 172's tricycle gear.
The Skyhawk is part of a large family of high-wing, tricycle-gear, single-engine Cessna planes, ranging from the two-seater 150/152 (no longer in production) to the more powerful 182 Skylane, the six-seat 206 Stationair, and the fourteen-seat turboprop 208 Caravan, along with several other models no longer produced.

Cessna 172 Skyhawk - Aircraft History   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-31)
The Skyhawk is ubiquitous throughout the Americas, Europe and parts of Asia; it is the aircraft most people visualize when they hear the words "small plane." More people probably know the name Piper Cub, but the Skyhawk's shape is far more familiar.
The 172 was a direct descendant of the Cessna 170, which used conventional (taildragger) landing gear instead of tricycle gear.
The older Skyhawks shipped with a 145 horsepower (110 kW) engine; later planes shipped with engines up to 180 horsepower (135 kW), though 150 or 160 hp (110 or 120 kW) is more common.

 Cessna 172 Skyhawk
Whether it was a 1960 or a 2004, almost every pilot flying today has had their hands on the control yoke of a Cessna 172 Skyhawk.
Cessna 150/152 pilots will find the 172 sluggish in its roll authority, the normal sacrifice for having an extremely stable aircraft usually means that it is not quite as nimble.
You want to hold the nose gear off as long as possible, setting it down at too high of a speed will cause a shimmy in some cases, which can sometimes, if the shimmy dampener is not functioning up to snuff, jar your fillings right out of your teeth.

Regardless of the airplane’s me-too qualities, the Skyhawk story is fairly amazing, an unbridled success by any measure, although not everyone agreed that tricycle gear was the wave of the future back in the early 1950s when it was initially proposed.
The story goes that a group of Cessna engineers pitched the nosewheel idea to the company’s marketing department, and the engineers were told in no uncertain terms to forget it.
