Ceti Alpha V - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In the science fiction universe of Star Trek, Ceti Alpha V is the fifth planet in the Ceti Alpha star system, consisting of a Class M, or Earth-like environment.
To make things worse for Khan's people, the nearby planet of Ceti Alpha VI exploded six months after their arrival, and the shock shifted Ceti Alpha V's orbit, and made the planet nearly uninhabitable.
Khan spent 15 years on the hellish world until years later, Ceti Alpha V was mistakenly visited by the science ship U.S.S. Reliant.

Ceti Alpha VI - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
As a result of this explosion the balance of life on Ceti Alpha V was altered significantly.
This explosion's shockwave caused Ceti Alpha V to move further away from the sun until it occupied Ceti Alpha VI's former orbit, thus explaining the Reliant crew's mistaking it for Ceti Alpha VI.
It is also worth noting that most of the movie's explanation suggests that the Ceti Alpha V travelled outward (instead of sunward) as a result of the explosion of a planet that was behind it and apparently linearly with it; an unlikely scenario given the known non-linear arrangement of bodies in our solar system.

In an alternate timeline, Ceti Alpha V was the refuge for the last 6,000 members of the human race in the 2150s and 2160s, survivors of the devastating Xindi attacks on Earth and its colonies, as it was far from the Delphic Expanse.

We all understand how Kirk never told Starfleet about the Botany Bay and it's crew: how he left them on Ceti Alpha V. That also means Checkov would not have known about it either, or you could speculate that Kirk told him sometime during their voyages, but never told Starfleet, period.
If he was in Security, he would have overseen their departure to Ceti Alpha V. This is where the YATI comes in, why?
Because if Checkov did not know about it, then the mistake (them thinking that were on Ceti Alpha V) would have been acceptable.

The excuse given for this is that when Ceti Alpha VI exploded, Ceti Alpha V was shifted into a new orbit.
But even assuming that the orbits and explosion were such that this happened, it beggars belief that the two planets are exactly the same size, have exactly the same mass, exactly the same surface geography, etc. Not to mention that the destruction of Ceti Alpha VI should have left a new asteroid belt...
