  Constellation Cetus
Cetus, in the form of a monstrous whale, set upon his mission of destruction and began the slaughter, working his way up and down the coast.
He made the bitter choice of sacrificing Andromeda, whereupon she was chained to the rocks and abandoned to await Cetus.
When Cetus discovered the prize awaiting him, he left off his wholesale destruction of the land and began swimming toward the ledge where Andromeda was chained.

Although Cetus is supposed to be a whale, from antiquity the constellation was considered to be the monster about to devour Andromeda before Perseus could come to the rescue.
Cetus' stars are quite faint, but there are a few well known stars here.
Such as UV Ceti, which is actually a pair of red dwarfs 9 light years away, and Mira (omicron Ceti) - perhaps the most famous variable.

This is a celestial map of the constellation Cetus, the Whale.
Cetus (a name from Greek mythology, referring to a Whale or Sea monster, see Ceto) is a constellation of the southern sky, in the region known as the Water, near other watery constellations like Aquarius, Pisces, and Eridanus.
Cetus lies far from the galactic plane, so many distant galaxies are visible, unobscured by dust from the Milky Way.

It is said that Cetus the sea monster was sent by Poseidon to attack the coastal lands of the kingdom of Cepheus.
Cetus is described by mythologists as a creature with the head and forelegs of a land animal and the body of a sea animal.
As the monster was approaching the chained Andromeda Perseus swooped in riding on Pegasus the Winged Horse and killed the sea monster by using the head of the evil monster Medusa whom Perseus had recently decapitated.

The Scientist : Cetus: A Collision Course With Failure
While former Cetus scientists and administrators interviewed for this article willingly describe a series of chronic problems besetting the company, they tend to agree that the fundamental flaw was Cetus' inclination to behave like a fully mature drug company instead of the adolescent it really was.
Moreover, during the mid-1980s, Cetus had developed the process and technology for polymerase chain reaction--or PCR--a method for replicating DNA that has gained acceptance in thousands of laboratories worldwide and that, from the outset, could be counted on by Cetus as the source of future revenue.
Cetus lagged behind other companies in the development of a monoclonal antibody for treatment of septic shock, caused by a deadly bacterial infection that can attack patients after surgery, burns, or trauma.

Dependant upon the position of the observer and the ‘seeing’ conditions the sky may not be dark enough to allow the stars forming the pentagon shaped head of Cetus to be visible, though the stars of Aries at a higher elevation above the Ecliptic may be in view.
The ‘Ecliptic’ is the apparent path of the planets and the sun seen against the background of the fixed stars and it is represented in the illustration by the green single line ascending diagonally across the scene.

The story behind the name: Cetus was a whale-like sea monster in Greek mythology, sent by the sea god Poseidon to wreak havoc on the kingdom of ancient Aethiopia.
Cetus terrorized the coastal waters of Aethiopia until the desperate ruler, King Cepheus, consulted with an oracle over this terrible problem.
Cepheus was instructed to sacrifice his daughter Andromeda to the monster, and she was quickly chained to an ocean cliff for Cetus to devour.

ETHIOPIAN CETUS : Sea monster of Ethiopia, labor Perseus ; Greek mythology ; pictures ; constellation : KETOS AITHIOPIOS
THE KETOS AITHIOPIOS (or Ethiopian Cetus) was a sea-monster sent by Poseidon to ravage Aithiopia as punishment for Queen Kassiopeia's hubristic boast that her daughter Andromeda was more beautiful than the Nereides.
When Andromeda was chained to the rocks as an offering to the beast, the hero Perseus sighted her on his flight from the land of the Gorgones, slew the monster, and carried the girl off as his bride.
With regard to the Cetus, they say that it was sent by Neptunus [Poseidon] to kill Andromeda, about whom we have already spoken.

Cetus has two stars with orbiting planets: 79 Ceti and 94 Ceti.
