	South Yorkshire Police - Medals and Awards for South Yorkshire Police Staff
		It is important that acts of gallantry and distinguished service by members of the public and support have an equal chance of recognition as those performed by members of the police service.
		The reward may be in the form of a gift of medals, testimonials, or sum of money or grant of money to the parents, widows, or children of such persons whose death may have resulted from their endeavours to save life from fire.
		The award of any medal or bar may be cancelled if a serving or former special constable, police officer or member of support staff is guilty of a criminal offence or behaviour, which breaches code 12 (general conduct) of the Misconduct Regulations.

	Order of Wear
		Holders of this Medal who are subsequently awarded a Bar to the Medal for gallant conduct should wear the Medal and gallantry Bar, and the Meritorious Service riband with gallantry rose Emblem in the order assigned to the Colonial Police Medal for Gallantry.
		Since 1993 The single silver oak leaf Emblem for gallantry in active operations from 3rd September 1993, if awarded for services in a theatre for which a campaign medal or a clasp has been granted, is worn on the riband of the appropriate medal.
		When the Defence Medal has not been granted or the award is for services subsequent to the war, the Emblem is worn directly on the coat after any Medal ribands.

		When a grant of the appropriate General Service Medal has already been made for service prior to 16th June, 1948, the award of a Clasp for these current services will be recorded as soon as the candidate has qualified.

		Scurry is best known for his invention known as the 'drip gun', 'drip rifle' or 'pop off rifle' used in the evacuation of Gallipoli in December 1915, a delayed action device for firing a rifle by means of weights operated through water escaping from from on tin into another.
		Scurry was awarded the Military Cross at 12 October 1916 at Petillon, France and previously the Distinguished Conduct Medal in December 1915 at Gallipoli.
		Repeatedly recommended for awards in recognition of his gallantry and leadership, it was 1918 before he finally received the Military Cross for his distinguished service in the attack on Polygon Wood the previous September.

		I have compiled a 'register' of over 1800 names detailing occupations, regiments, medals and activities etc. The info is maintained on database and so is easy to add to and to interrogate.
		I have access to Mitchell's and Hibbard's Medal Rolls and I would be pleased to add to the register the present whereabouts of any of the DoM bars.- but this is not military research project as such, any details of the besieged - their life before or after Mafeking for example, would be most welcome.
		This officer has a great reputation for his gallantry, skill and devotion to duty while carrying out his work under the most difficult and dangerous conditions on many occasions.

		On May 2, 1921 the U.S.S. WHIPPLE and her division mates were being transferred to the United States Asiatic Fleet stationed in the Philippine Islands.
		A special Navy Expeditionary Medal with silver "W" on the service ribbon bar, the only one of its kind during the war had been authorized for Wake's defenders.
		A Presidential Unit Citation was awarded to the Navy and Marine personnel for "courageous conduct against an overwhelming superiority of enemy air, sea, and land attacks" during the period December 8-22, 1941...." The citation was authorized and signed personally by President Roosevelt himself.
