For decades, the CWC has been a key player in Sri Lankan politics, and had in the past tilted the scales of power with its bloc of MPs.
Two of the eight CWC MPs in the 225-member Parliament, recently crossed over to the Government.
In the November 17 Parliamentary poll, the CWC backed the Opposition Leader and former Prime Minister, Ranil Wickremesinghe, who lost the poll, but was overwhelmingly backed by the Plantation Tamils.

All Ceylon Tamil Congress (in Tamil: அகில இலங்கைத் தமிழ்க் காங்கிரஸ்), is the oldest Tamil political party in Sri Lanka.
An Historical Relation of the Island Ceylon is a book written by the English trader and sailor Robert Knox in 1681, describing his experiences some years earlier on the South Asian island now best known as Sri Lanka.
As well as being a good read in its own right, it is one of the most important contemporary accounts of 17th century Ceylonese life and an invaluable insight into an early European view of the island's culture.

 Whither the Ceylon Workers Congress
When he assumed the mantle of the CWC leadership in the late nineties, it was at a time when some seniors in the CWC had left its ranks and were embroiled in a bitter vendetta with the CWC in and out of Court.
CWC conventions serve as a platform for the leadership to seek a mandate from its membership to charter a path which will lead to the attainment of short and long term goals of the community.
By doing so, the CWC will be able to re-establish its role as a credible trade union and political force and no longer to be swayed or influenced by carrots dangled before it by the ruling political parties in the country.

The city of Colombo, which was severely affected, recorded two deaths when an office worker who fell into a pit by the side of a road, drowned, and another died of electrocution.
The cause of the death of the office worker is an unprotected man-hole, which was left open.
Most of the minority parties and the opposition United National Party have pooh-poohed the proposals as something going backwards from the existing provincial council system, which was set up under the 13th Amendment to the Constitution as a sequel to the Indo-Lanka Agreement signed between the governments of India and Sri Lanka in 1987.

Another trade union, the Democratic Workers Congress (DWC), was formed in 1956 as a breakaway faction of the CWC as a result of leadership rivalries between the president, S.Thondaman, and the general secretary A. iz.
The political potentiality of the Indian Tamil workers and the CIC led by Mr.Thondaman were viewed as threats to the power of the ruling United National Party.
When he joined the UNP government he explained that he owed his position to the CWC and the CWC's policy was to get citizenship for the stateless and better working conditions for estate labour.

Sept 07, Colombo: Ceylon Workers' Congress (CWC), the major constituent of the Upcountry Tamils of Sri Lanka has decided to re-acquire the ministerial portfolios from which they resigned few weeks ago.
However, the CWC has demanded the Ministry of Urban Development for its leader Arumugam Thondaman, CWC sources said.
Thondaman was to return to homeland after a foreign tour yesterday and the final decision was to follow.

 Sri Lanka's Two Ministers Resign Over Election Dispute
The CWC which represents minority Tamils of Indian origin and a partner of the ruling United National Party (UNP) said that Housing Minister Arumugam Thondaman and Deputy Livestock Minister Muthu Sivalingam were quitting their ministerial posts.
The CWC spokesman R. Yogarajan said Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe's UNP government had substituted some of CWC candidates with other party candidates to contest the local government elections scheduled for March.
However, he said the CWC would continue to support the UNP government for its efforts to achieve peace in the war-torn country with Norwegian mediation.

Colombo, 03 August, (Asiantribune.com): There is confusion right now as to whether the coalition partner, Ceylon Workers Congress, is with the Mahinda Rajapakse government or not.
It was reported that both flew in a rage and at the height of emotional explosion Basil Rajapakse had asked the CWC to quit, if that is what they want.
