Chabad Lubavitch, also known as Lubavitch Chabad, or simply Chabad or Lubavitch, is the name of a movement of Orthodox Jews belonging to hasidic Judaism who follow the teachings and customs of halakha as taught by their Rebbes (rabbi, leaders).
Chabad is a Hebrew acronym for Chochma (Wisdom), Bina (Understanding), and Daat (Knowledge), that was chosen early on by its founder, based on themystical teachings of the kabbalah.
Founder of Chabad Lubavitch: Rabbi Shneur Zalman of Liadi 1745 - 1812, son of Rabbi Boruch.

The Rebbe was one of the select circle of family members allowed to leave the country with Rabbi Yosef Yitzchak in 1927.
The network of teachers and activists remained in place, and Rabbi Yosef Yitzchak continued to direct its activities from the other side of the Iron Curtain until his passing in 1950, when the Rebbe, whose own involvement never abated, assumed the leadership of Chabad.
In the darkest years of anti-religious persecution, the Rebbe maintained contact with the Jews of the Soviet Union through many secret channels, even sending emissaries in the guise of tourists and business travelers.

The Federation recently elected Rabbi Lazar to the title of "Chief Rabbi of Russia." This move was aimed at displacing Rabbi Adolph Shayavich of the Russian Jewish Congress who is recognized widely by the local and international Jewish community as the Chief Rabbi of Russia.
Lubavich is reportedly spending tens of millions of dollars annually in the FSU, much of it donated by well meaning but uninformed Reform Jews.
