The Gran Chaco (Quechua chaqu, "hunting land"), dubbed by some as "the last South American frontier", is a sparsely populated, hot and semi-arid lowland region of the Río de la Plata basin, divided between Bolivia, Paraguay, Argentina and a small portion in Brazil called Mato Grosso.
It was the scene of The Gran Chaco War (1932-1935) (though violence started as early as December 5, 1928) between Paraguay and Bolivia over supposed oil in the Chaco Boreal (a region north of the Pilcomayo River and to the west of the Paraguay River).
The ecosystems of the Gran Chaco are unique and are slowly being destroyed by civilization with the introduction of cattle, burning of vegetation and irresponsible agricultural decisions.

The Chaco Boreal is a region of land occupying approximately 100,000 square miles in Northwestern Paraguay, Southeastern Bolivia, and Northern Argentina.
It was difficult for soldiers to survive the harsh climate of the Chaco region.
The Chaco Boreal's land is flat and marked by scrub woodlands to the West of the River Paraguay that include the quebracho tree, a valuable source of minerals.

The discovery of oil in a narrow strip of the barren section of the Chaco Boreal, at the foot of the Bolivian Andes, precipitated the Chaco War, 1932-35, between Bolivia and Paraguay.
Technically the Gran Chaco was intended to be part of Bolivia since it had been part of the audiencia of Charcas, but Bolivia paid little attention to this wasteland and Paraguayan settlers opened up the region while Paraguayan soldiers pushed back the natives.
Three quarters of the disputed Chaco Boreal went to Paraguay; at the same time Bolivia was granted a corridor to the Paraguay River, the privilege of using Puerto Casado, and the right to construct a Bolivian port.

Paraguay being one of the most poor nations on earth could barely afford to equip her self adequately with small arms, aircraft and artillery never mind something as exotic and expensive as tanks or state of the art aircraft.
Consequently it was Bolivia that dominated the skies above the Gran Chaco and it was to her that the dubious honor fell of being the first (and to this day only) S-American country to use tanks in battle in a fully declared war against another nation on S-American soil.
