A few years later, Chad Varah began his more famous venture when he set up the "Samaritans", the first telephone help line for those in social and psychological need, which since then has had followers the world over.
Born in 1911, Chad Varah was ordained as Anglican clergyman in 1936.
In a recent BBC radio interview, Varah described how this event changed his life: he resolved from that moment to put an end to the general tabu on public discussion about sexuality and bodily functions, and so work towards a world where such a thing could never happen.

Varah was delighted when, in 2006, his eldest son, the late Michael Varah, was appointed to sit on the organisation's newly created board of trustees.
Varah founded the Samaritans in the church vestry on November 2 1953 and continued to run the organisation from the crypt, where the first volunteers were based.
Varah's battle for well-informed sex education continued into his eighties: in 1992 he founded, and from 1999 was secretary of, MAGMOG (Men against Genital Mutilation of Girls), going into the homes of immigrants from East Africa to convince them of the pointless cruelty of the practice.

Born in Barton-upon-Humber, where his father was the vicar at St Chad's, the local Anglican church, Chad Varah was educated at Oxford before, he said, being "press-ganged" into the life of a priest.
Standing in at the funeral of a 14-year-old girl, he asked the undertaker why the girl was being buried in unconsecrated ground, and was told she had killed herself because she had mistaken menstruation for a serious disease.
Chad Varah always insisted that it should not be a religious organisation.

The eldest of nine children of an Anglican Church minister, Edward Chad Varah was born on November 12, 1911, in the small town of Barton upon Humber, County of Lincolnshire, England.
In the culturally repressive atmosphere of the United Kingdom in the 1930s, Varah recognized the extent to which confusion and ignorance about many social issues, several still shrouded in taboo, contributed to the despair that often led to suicide.
He officiated at the funeral of a thirteen-year-old girl who was so confused and isolated that she believed that the onset of menstruation was the sign of a mortal illness that would lead to a slow and painful death; the terrified girl killed herself.

One day Chad Varah, having decided to create a telephone counselling service (The Samaritans) in the crypt of the church of St. Stephen Walbrook in London, set out to secure a simple, easily-remembered number.
As the church was located in the "Mansion House" area of London, the number would have to be assigned the prefix MAN. Varah settled upon MAN-9000.
In need of a telephone to call the Post Office (to see whether the number was available), Varah was pleased to find an ancient telephone in the corner of the church's dusty crypt.
