Historically, Chadds Ford is the village and surrounding land on both sides of the Brandywine River where U.S. Route 1 (aka Baltimore Pike, aka the Great Road to Nottingham) crosses the stream.
Chadds Ford Township began as the southeastern half of Birmingham Township in Chester County.
Chadds Ford Township has not been incorporated since the name change although a blanket resolution approved by the supervisors changed the name on records and documents.

CHADDS FORD -- A brief check with neighboring townships reveals what many people in Chadds Ford already know -- public sewer customers in Chadds Ford are paying more, almost twice as much as others.
Though some township residents are eager to have public sewers installed, others balk at the high price, especially when their own septic systems are functioning properly.
Chadds Ford supervisors’ Chairman George Thorpe said the township is not using sewers to control growth, though he said it might work out that way.

Chadds Ford residents had an opportunity last week to see the two plans Toll Bros. Inc.
According to Colagreco, Toll Bros. would dedicate 80 acres of open space to the township under the PRD plan, but said there would be no space available for the township if only 70 homes were built, as called for by the first plan.
Township supervisors’ Chairman Jim Shipley said at the start of the meeting there were ambiguities within the PRD ordinances that lend themselves to interpretation and they could be challenged in court, which could be expensive.
