Registered Cossacks - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Registered Cossacks had many priviliges, including personal freedom, exclusion from many taxes and duties, and the right to receive wages (although the Commonwealth military was plagued with fiscal problems, leading to extremely delayed wages, often paid in items like clothes or weapons instead of coin).
Many Cossacks were skilled warriors, and Cossacks' major income source came from raids (chadzki) on the southern neigbhours of the Commonwealth (Ottoman Empire and its vassals).
However only a small number were actually 'registered Cossacks' - the exact number was from few hundred to few thousands and varied in time, usually being increased during wartime.

Around the end of 16th century, the relations between the Commonwealth and the Ottomans, never too cordial, further worsened with the growing number of independent actions by Cossacks.
From the second part of the 16th century, Cossacks started raiding (chadzki) territories under Ottoman rule.
Commonwealth could not control fiercely independent Cossacks, but was held responsible for them, since at that time they were nominally under Commonwealth rule.

In 1617 alongside Żołkiewski he took part in the Moldavian Magnate Wars and fought against the powerful Turkish army of Iskander pasha (high official in the Ottoman Empire), which ended in a negotiated ceasefire.
He also negotiated with Cossacks near Olszanica, Russia, where the Cossack register (list of priviliged Cossacks in the Commonwealth military) was limited to 1,000 and Cossack's raids (chadzki) on the Black Sea were forbidden.
Those raids, often reaching and pillaging wealthy Ottoman cities vastly contributed to the Cossack income, but provoked retaliation raids back into the Commonwealth territory.
