Chains and Land Areas(Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-04)
A unit that is common to forestry is the surveyor's or Gunter's chain.
This unit of measure is an old measure used in surveying many of the original land lines in the U.S. chain is equal to 66 feet and is divided into 100 links equal to 66 ft/100 or 0.66 feet each.
Using the chain measure, a section is a square that is 80 chains on a side, and a "forty" is a square area that is 20 chains on a side.
Since the width of an acre was defined as one chain (with a length of one furlong), it was also known as an acre's breadth.
The unit was once important in everyday life, being one of the fundamental units of Imperial system in the United Kingdom and its colonies, and was used to some extent in engineering and surveying in the U.S. In Britain, it was commonly used in the railway industry (where the measure is still in widespread use).
It is the length of the pitch, between the wickets, in cricket.

Chain (business), two or more retail stores dealing in the same general kind of merchandise and operated by the same firm.

Acre - The (English) acre is a unit of area equal to 43,560 square feet, or 10 square chains, or 160 square poles.
The (square) arpent is a unit of area, approximately.845 acres, or 36,802 square feet.
Chain carrier - An assistant to the surveyor, the chain carriers moved the surveyingchain from one location to another under the direction of the surveyor.
In a chain saw unit, composed of a saw chain and saw chain bar, for a motor-driven wood-cutting chain saw, longer working life and other desirable results flow from forming one or both of its components from a low alloy steel having a carbon content of 0.55 - 0.75 wt.
As an example, saw chainlinks made of carbon steel or low alloy steel -- and particularly the cutter links, exposed to the greatest strains -- have not shown the desired toughness thereby causing insufficient life as a result: at the same time the edge sharpness and the wear resistance have not fulfilled, customary demands.
The chain saw unit according to the invention is characterized by excellent workability, and exceptionally high toughness and very good permanency of sharpness and wear resistance, in spite of the lower carbon content of the alloy compared to the carbon steels and low alloy steels generally used for the purpose.
The Chain Glide unit is designed to operate by enclosing the drive chain in an sectional extruded aluminum rail (in my case I had to buy a Genie extension kit to extend the rail approximately one additional foot to accommodate my 8 ft. door).
When raising the door, the chain is in tension as the drive unit pulls the chain into the housing; when the door is lowered, the chain is in compression as the chain is pushed out into the guide rail to lower the door.
I retested the unit and made sure that that door could be opened and closed easily by hand (two fingers), even with the Genie door bracket sliding along (but disconnected from - by use of the emergency release cord) the guide rail.
UNIT 31 - EFFICIENT STORAGE OF LINES - CHAIN CODES(Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-04)
chain code is most useful in applications where vector data originated in raster form, from a scanner or an image
Using a sample line drawn on a sheet of paper, write out (a) the Freeman chain code representation of the line using single digits ranging from 0 to 7, (b) its representation using the binary code based on turn angles, and (c) its representation using run encoded chains.
In preparation for the Unit 32, figure out how you would set up a program to determine where two lines, defined by their end points, intersect.

Teach students a food chain song to the tune of Farmer in the Dell.
Have students form a visual image of the living things involved in a food chain by drawing a diagram or flow chart of the food chain or completing a diagram with pictures.
C. Explain how food chains relate to you and how you might be affected by a break in the food chain.
What I have noticed is the speed and tension sensors have magnetized my chain, making it harder to clean since the majority of the dirt is powdered chain, which being steel, is attracted to the chain and difficult to remove.
The chain can become strongly manetic to the point the free ends will stay together for 3-4 inches of arc.
I made a degausser with a coil of insulated wire and a lightbulb in series to limit current.

Competing against consulting giant Accenture as well as some smaller players, IBM's new SCM (supply-chain management) outsourcing business unit will be part of its Business Process Transformation arm, said Bill Ciemny, who will lead the SCM unit.
Targeting a "supply-chain transformation services" market estimated by IBM at $23.5 billion, the new unit will bring together IBM's existing 8,500 supply-chain consultants with another 15,000 IBM employees who have worked on building IBM's own internal supply chain.
According to Ciemny, customers are particularly interested in finding out about how IBM moved from a fixed to a variable cost structure, and about lessons IBM has learned about getting the best mix of offshore and local procurement.
UPS will cut an unspecified number of jobs at its supply-chain unit, laying off some employees and reassigning others, Bloomberg reported Friday.
The layoffs at UPS Supply Chain Solutions affect mostly administrative and technical staff in North America, Bloomberg reported, quoting UPS spokeswoman Susan Rosenberg.
UPS expects to complete the reorganization by the end of the year, Bloomberg said.
