	Chain Home - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
		Chain Home / AMES TYPE 1 (Air Ministry Experimental Station) was the codename for the ring of coastal radar stations built by the British before and during World War II.
		The Chain Home stations were arranged along the British coast, initially in the south and east of England, but later throughout the entire coastline, including the Shetland Islands.
		The Chain Home system was dismantled after the war, but some of the tall steel radar towers remain, converted into new uses for the 21st Century.

		The majority of Chain Home stations were also provided with reserve equipment, either buried or remote.
		The East Coast Chain Home station at Schoolhill was opened in about 1940 and remained operational through the war.

		RAF Stenigot was opened in 1940 as an east coast Chain Home radar station.
		East coast stations were built to the same design as the experimental radar establishment set up at Bawdsey in 1936 consisting of a protected transmitter and receiver block with transmitter aerials suspended from four 350' steel towers and the receiver aerials mounted on four 240' timber towers.
		After the war, the station remained operational as part of the 'defended area', a line or chain home stations running down the east coast from Flamborough Head in Yorkshire and along the south coast to Portland Bill in Dorset.

		On completion of the experimental station at Bawdsey, Dunkirk was the third 'East Coast' Chain Home station to be constructed after 1937 (after Swingate at Dover) to provide long range early warning for the Thames estuary and the south eastern approaches to London.
		Following the installation if the Chain Home network, continuous research and experimentation was taking place to improve the quality and type of radars that were available, During this process it became necessary to monitor and record enemy radar transmissions with a view to overcome possible jamming by the Germans and to facilitate our own jamming.
		After the war Dunkirk radar was placed on care and maintenance and in the early 1950's RAF Dunkirk was one of 15 stations selected under the ROTOR programme as a 'readiness chain home'.

		By July of 1939 the CD set could detect an aircraft flying at 500 feet up to 25 miles away with very good accuracy and in August 1939, on Watson-Watt's recommendation, the Air Ministry ordered 24 CD sets from Pye Radio with the intention of placing one at each CH site.
		These stations became known as Chain Home Low (CHL) stations and the equipment as Radar Type 2.
