Star Trek: The Next Generation - Memory Alpha, the Star Trek Wiki
Star Trek: The Next Generation (often abbreviated to TNG) is the second live-action Star Trek TV series, set in the 24th century.
Despite the apparent similarities with the original series, the creators of TNG were adamant about creating a bold, independent vision of the future.
As with the original Star Trek, TNG's special effects utilized miniatures, but due to great advancements in computerized effects and opticals, the show leaped ahead of its predecessor in terms of quality effects.

Ship in a Bottle (TNG episode) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Harking back to an earlier episode of the Star Trek: The Next Generation series, Elementary, Dear Data, the holodeck creation of Professor James Moriarty (played by guest actor Daniel Davis) from Sherlock Holmes is awakened from his long sleep when his program, saved and deactivated years ago, is reactivated.
The additional twist is the action by Moriarty to create a companion for himself, commanding the computer of the Enterprise-D to place another sentient mind within a female character of the Sherlock Holmes novels.
It has been theorised that this was an attempt by the writers to have Moriarty appear as an independent entity; a sentient being with his own wants and needs, not merely a talking version of the literary character.

When the away team arrives at Celtris III and invades the supposed facility, it turns out to be a hoax with the intent to lure Picard to the planet; the team is met by a number of Cardassian troops.

Command, Tactical/Security, and Science/Medical are three different "departments" and are only interchangeable as a promotion or transfer, not as standard procedure.
As for the episode with Data changing uniform color, his orders were approved by Starfleet and thus was approved to wear the command uniform.
But Tuvok WAS permanently promoted to commanding officer as the Doctor didn't think that there was any cure for the virus that Janeway and Chakotay had and the only way that they could stay alive was to be left behind on that planet.

The next episode DS9: "Duet" shows us the first Kobheerian in a credited role and it is the first time that the name of the race is mentioned.
Yet, it is odd that nobody in TNG: "Booby Trap" notices the striking similarity to the extinct Promellians, unless it is commonly known that descendants of the Promellians still exist.

At the end of Part 1 of "Chain of Command," Jean-Luc Picard had been captured by the Cardassians, who are moving towards the brink of war with the Federation.
It does not matter that he is chained and has a pain-inducing device embedded in his body, Gul Madred does not stand a chance and when he allows his daughter to see what he is doing at this work, Picard has the opening he needs.
"Chain of Command" is the best mid-season two-part episode from the series because it is so well integrated into what has happened with these characters for the past five seasons.

Later, however, I bet he subtly, quietly passed the word in his professional circle that the Enterprise command crew was a gaggle of spoiled brats, and working with any of them on a future assignment should probably be avoided.
The weakness of the episode is the contrivance by which only Jean-Luc Picard in the entire Federation knows enough about theta band emissions that he is sent off to do grunt work on some back planet.
Although Chain of Command focuses mainly on Captain Picard, important parts are played by Riker, Troi, Worf, and Dr Crusher.

The intensity of this episode owes largely to the two guest performances, David Warner as the cruel tormentor Gul Madred, and Ronny Cox as the austere Captain Jellico.
While the diplomatic fencing between Jelico and the Cardassians is certainly interesting, the heart of this episode are the encounters between Picard and his captor, Gul Madred (David Warner, in another one of his patented bad guy roles).
In this episode, the second part of 'Chain of Command', Picard has been captured by Cardassians, and is being tortured by a suitably unpleasant Gul, while the Enterprise is under the command of Captain Edward Jellico.

Perhaps the best Picard episode in terms of giving us background into his younger days, this episode also serves up a rousing 24th Century "It's a Wonderful Life," where Picard can see how one important moment in youth can have drastic implications later in life.
A delightful and thought-provoking romp across the galaxy, this episode is indeed a chase, as the title suggests, but it's also a mystery with a satisfying conclusion that helps to stitch together some of the lingering questions fans have always had about the preponderance of humanoid lifeforms in the galaxy.

And more generally, since the main computer is able to recognize voice patterns, this programming could be recognized ship-wide, so that any replicator on board will refuse replicating the hazardous substance for that specific person.
Safety protocols in the main computer (although usually not referred to as such) are in place to ensure the safety of a ship and crew by limiting access to some command functions to the senior staff or maybe just the ship's captain.
In the shows, it was also revealed that some non-Federation species, such as the Klingons and the Romulans, perceive the safety protocols as "yet another sign of Starfleet's weakness".

Mar 7 2005, 08:33 PM My favourite has to be the two part "Chain of Command." I like the political/Orwellian aspects of it, and the Cardassians are really a great enemy.
And the episode where Data creates his daughter, the title of which is not coming to me at the moment.
I agree that "Darmok" and especially "Chain of Command" were both VERY good episodes and outstanding in terms of new and challenging story writing (Picard's torture scene is still one of the most daring scenes shot in Star Trek/Television history.)
