In 1967, a new set of bridges, to the north, carrying I-270 was built and in 1970 the Chain of Rocks Bridge was closed.
In 1998, the bridge was leased to a local trails group for a pedestrian bridge across the river and occasional motor tours for various Route 66 groups.

So, they built "straight" till they got to the center of the river, then they "jogged" so that the widest possible space between piers would be parallel to the current.

The bridge overlooks the mighty Mississippi River and during the winter months one can do a little eagle watching from this historic bridge.
On one photo (above) you can actually see the "chain of rocks" just under the surface of the Mississippi which caused the Army Corps of Engineers to build a canal around this phenomenon, diverting barge traffic through the canal instead of getting hung up on the rocks.
