This bridge in addition to being a part of the historic route 66 also has the distinction of having a 22 degree turn in the middle, a huge impediment to truck traffic and site of multiple accidents.
These problems were solved as the area was later bypassed by the Chain of Rocks Canal and in 1967 a new bridge carrying I-270 was built and the old bridge was closed for 31 years.
