Topic: Chainmail game

Chainmail (game) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Chainmail is a medieval miniatures wargame created by Jeff Perren and Gary Gygax.
The man-to-man melee used two six-sided dice (2d6) to determine whether a kill is made and took account of the attacker's weapon and the defender's armor.
Part of the reason for the change was the relative lack of success of the Chainmail game, based on traditional metal miniature figures, compared to the competing Mage Knight game, which featured pre-painted plastic figures.

Chainmail is a miniatures combat game for Dungeons and Dragons, not quite a supplement and not quite a spin-off game: with all the DandD references it can't quite stand alone as a game, but the rules have been changed too comprehensively for DandD players to pick it up without a little study.
Chainmail is based on the rules of Dungeons and Dragons Third Edition, streamlined to allow simpler, quicker battles by dropping many of the intricacies and details of the game in favor of speed.
Chainmail includes a setting and background story only nominally related to the standard Greyhawk environment of DandD3, and which will be featured in the official Chainmail game league, but the setting is easily disposible if players are more interested in their own games.

 Fantasy Role-Playing Games
Role-playing games are "fiction in action." Each player develops one or more fictitious characters as his "playing pieces." The game involves the activities, interactions and experiences of these fictitious folks.
The result is a game which is not as cut-and-dried as classic games.
The standard process used by most games is to allow a certain number of points to be allotted to a character's attributes.

The game first appeared at the 1973 EasterCon, had a limited availability throughout 1973, and the first print run of 1,000 copies was officially released (in a white box) in January of 1974.
When the game started getting somewhat popular after the first year or so, they decided to publish some of the details of their campaigns along with some expansion rules for the game.
It was decided that a new edition of the game should be released, but instead of calling it a second edition and discontinuing the first, TSR launched Advanced Dungeons and Dragons.

The game was reintroduced to the world with a new, third edition that made the game easier to play, easier to understand, and more flexible then previous editions.
Like many miniatures games, skirmish is played by building a “warband” of several creatures or characters (represented by minis) and using them to defeat your opponent’s warband.
By simplifying this game with just the one die, it makes for a more streamlined system that is still logically consistent (if not equal to) the core Dungeons and Dragons game.

Despite the more recent appearance of new types of roleplaying games, character development games continue strong to this day, and are definitely the most important branch in the roleplaying evolutionary tree.
When talking about core game design here, we'll only cover abstract or overarching modeling issues; the specific questions of modeling characters will be delayed until the discussions of the "character development" branch.

Chainmail was closer to Games Workshop than WizKids, with metal figures that required painting and a more conventional miniature rules system than WizKids'.
Chainmail's abandonment is a continuation of serial unsuccessful attempts to crack the miniatures market by the owners of the DandD brand begun while TSR was an independent company.
