Conservative Party (UK) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Conservative Party is descended from the Tory Party of the eighteenth and nineteenth Centuries.
Though the Conservatives were in government for two-thirds of the twentieth century and are often referred to as the 'natural party of government', they have been in opposition in Parliament since losing the 1997 election to the Labour Party under Tony Blair.
Although Thatcher herself was socially conservative and a practicing Methodist, her supporters harbour a range of social opinions from the libertarian views of Michael Portillo to the traditional conservatism of William Hague and David Davis.
