Schooling in the GDR was compulsory and free for children between the ages of 6 and 16.
From 1968 through 1989 the GDR was governed under a constitution that defined the country as a sovereign Socialist state in which all political power was exercised by the working people.
By July the economy of the GDR had merged with that of West Germany, and on Oct. 3, 1990, the GDR ceased to exist and East Germany became part of a reunited country.

Under Honecker's rule, the GDR adopted a program of "consumer socialism," which resulted in a marked improvement in living standards—already the highest among the Eastern bloc countries.
