  United States Senate - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The President pro tempore, committee chairmen, and some other officials are generally from the majority party; they have counterparts (for instance, the "ranking members" of committees) in the minority party.
Formerly, committee chairmanship was determined purely by seniority; as a result, several elderly senators continued to serve as chairmen despite severe physical infirmity or even senility.
Modern committee chairmen are typically not forceful in exerting their influence, although there have been some exceptions.

 New Chairmen at the University of Utah   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-31)
We decided to offer the program during the fall quarter when chairmen were not yet burdened with the details of their jobs, but at a time when they had had enough experience so they knew what sorts of questions were important to ask.
We invited experienced department chairmen to be at each of these meetings, as well as the appropriate academic resource people, and again the format was that of the guests speaking to the questions which came from the group.
It has come to grips with real problems that chairmen who are just beginning to be experienced are encountering; it has enabled them to become acquainted with the chief administrative officers of the university, and each other; and, in general, has helped the new chairmen to feel more comfortable in their positions.

 USATODAY.com - SEC requires independent mutual fund chairmen   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-31)
SEC Chairman William Donaldson, who is resigning from the agency Thursday, sided with the commission's two Democrats in the 3-2 vote that reconsidered the measure at the direction of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia.
The commission, however, simply affirmed its previous rules, stating that the costs involved with retaining independent chairmen, and also raising the number of independent directors on a fund board to 75% from the current 50%, were not onerous for the $8 trillion mutual fund industry.
Some industry experts say the new independent chairmen would replace chairmen who are more well-versed in fund operations and therefore they would have to hire additional staff to assist them.

In a recent letter to the US Securities and Exchange Commission, Hill insisted that all fund chairmen should be independent, and free of links to the company managing customer assets, such Putnam Investments or Fidelity Investments.
Fidelity executives and others who oppose the independentchairman rule have lobbed insults at Hill and the Putnam board for months, saying an outsider was unable to prevent market timing in the Boston firm’s mutual funds over the past four years.
By insisting on outside chairmen, Oxley wrote, the SEC could ‘‘eradicate the self-dealing by interested, management-affiliated chairmen and its harmful effects on mutual fund shareholders.’’;

Since 1968, when the MLA's computer began to record and maintain the data on the chairmen's list, the MLA has been able to assemble more nearly complete information about departmental language offerings than was formerly available.
Note: The MLA records the language information as reported by chairmen or other institutional officers, but does not attempt to classify the names reported or to exclude from the list names referring to extinct languages or to language families.
