Topic: Chaka Khan

  Rufus/Chaka Khan
Khan's devastating vocal talent is quite apparent on the half-dozen songs she gets to her own, but Stockert hogs most of the original material (his painful ballad "Haulin' Coal"), leaving her to cover tunes by veterans like Steve Stills (a really miserable "Love The One You're With/Sit Yourself Down" medley), and
Khan's solo debut was produced by Arif Mardin, and he went with a lush, fully orchestrated sound that's sometimes slow but never dull.
Khan and Mardin were ready to experiment, coming up with energetic raveups ("Tearin' It Up" with a zillion Chaka backing vocal tracks), a terrific slow electronic funk number ("Slow Dancing" with guest vocals from Rick James), and a medley that reinterprets a bunch of bebop tunes as synth funk.

Chaka Khan - Music Downloads - Online
After quitting high school in 1969, Khan joined the group Lyfe, soon exiting to join another dance band, the Babysitters; neither was on the fast track to success, but her fortunes changed when she teamed with ex-American Breed member Kevin Murphy and André Fisher to form Rufus.
Debuting in 1973 with a self-titled effort on the ABC label, Rufus was among the pre-eminent funk groups of the decade; distinguished by Khan's dynamic vocals, the group earned half a dozen gold or platinum albums before she went solo in 1978.
Still, while subsequent LPs like 1986's Destiny and 1988's C.K. kept Khan riding high on the R&B charts, her standing in pop's mainstream again began to wane, and at the end of the 1980s, she relocated to Europe.

For her 20+ years in the spotlight, Chaka Khan has virtually defined the term "Soul Diva," through a string of memorable, soulful performances and a singularly strong personality both as a member of Rufus and as a solo artist.
At age 19 Khan joined an established Chicago soul/funk group that was renamed Rufus, and she and the band played Midwest locations (including, amazingly, my brother's Flint, Michigan 1973 prom) before signing with ABC Records and recording the Stevie Wonder-penned classic "Tell Me Something Good" in 1974.
Khan went solo for good in 1984, releasing the album and single "I Feel For You," an uber-infectious dance cut that shot to #1 and became the biggest solo hit she would ever have.
