Chakravarti Rajagopalachari (1879-1972) was a prominent Indian nationalist leader, first Indian governor general of his country, and founder of the Swatantra party.
Chakravarti Rajagopalachari was born in a village in Madras and graduated from the Central Hindu College of Bangalore.
Soon thereafter Rajagopalachari parted company with the Nehru Congress, and in 1959 he was instrumental in the creation of the anti-Congress Swatantra party, which became the chief proponent of the free-enterprise philosophy in the Republic of India.

Swatantra Party (swatantra in means independence in many Indian languages) was a political party in India founded by Chakravarti Rajagopalachari in 1959.
The party opposed the Nehruvian socialist of the Congress Party outlook by advocating free enterprise, opposing the so-called licence-permit Raj, and ending India's economic autarky by courting Western investment.
It came to be seen as being associated with wealthy industrialists and former maharajas.
