What is Chalcanthite?   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-03)
Chalcanthite is a water soluble, copper sulfate found on or near copper.
As a poison, chalcanthite was formerly used to clear ponds of excessive plant growth.
Despite its toxicity, chalcanthite is used by holistic medical practitioners as an oral medicine to purge the body of toxins and phlegm.

 Chalcanthite
In wetter regions, chalcanthite is not found in large quantities, but in arid regions, such as in Chile, Spain, Utah, Nevada, and Arizona it is often found.
In many copper mines, chalcanthite is an ongoing precipitate forming blue encrustations, crystal aggregates and stalactites right on the sides of the mine's shaft and timbers.
Some Chalcanthite seems resistant to water absorption and this resistance seems tied to the purity of the specimen, especially the lack of Iron impurities.

Chalcanthite has several alternative names, including blue stone, blue vitriol, and copper vitriol.
Chalcanthite's blue color is one of its most notable features, but it is insufficient in identification.

 MELANTERITE (Hydrated Iron Sulfate)
A technique for removing copper from the copper sulfate mineral chalcanthite is responsible for the naming of an alternate name for melanterite.
Chalcanthite, like melanterite, is soluble in water and it thus makes a solution of copper sulfate.
Associated Minerals are epsomite, chalcanthite, gypsum, pyrite, pyrrhotite, marcasite and chalcopyrite.

 CHALCANTHITE (Hydrated Copper Sulfate)
In wetter regions, chalcanthite is not found in large amounts (originally), but in arid regions, such as in Chile, chalcanthite is a major ore. Any sulfate rich ground water that might leach out copper from other copper minerals, will crystallize chalcanthite when the water has a chance to evaporate.
It is this ease of crystallization that is the bane of natural chalcanthite crystals, at least with respect to mineral collectors.
Chalcanthite is the name of a group of only four triclinic sulfates of which chalcanthite is its only common member.

eBay Guides - Chalcanthite - fake fake fake
Well, I did write a guide on this large amount of Chalcanthite from Poland that is influxing into eBay but for some reason it has mysteriously vanished.
Chalcanthite occurs in arid copper mineral deposit regions, usually as a bluish crust or VERY rarely a small ram's horn presentation - it NEVER occurs as these gaudy and florid bathtub-grown crystals that are either grown on, or stuck onto rocky matrix and come from Poland.
Chalcanthite and the rubbish these people are selling are chemically identical - hydrated copper sulphate - however, we have all grown crystals at home as kids by dissolving stuff in water, making a saturated solution and watching the crystal grow...

Chalcanthite: Chalcanthite mineral information and data.
Chalcanthite is natural copper sulphate, the blue crystals commonly found in school chemistry rooms.
It is usually of post-mining formation, forming on mine walls and by the action of acidic surface waters on copper veins.
Almost all Chalcanthite specimens made available for sale (eg on eBay, listed from 'Brazil') are artificial fakes, as good crystals are easily grown.

Values of pH have been measured as low as -3.6, combined metal concentrations as high as 200 g/liter, and sulfate concentrations as high as 760 g/liter.
Copious quantities of soluble metal sulfate salts such as melanterite, chalcanthite, coquimbite, rhomboclase, voltaite, copiapite, and halotrichite have been identified, and some of these are forming from negative-pH mine waters.
Geochemical calculations show that, under a mine-plugging remediation scenario, these salts would dissolve and the resultant 600,000-m3 mine pool would have a pH of 1 or less and contain several grams of dissolved metals per liter, much like the current portal effluent water.

On the other hand, it is quite easy to grow these "chalcanthite" specimens in a lab (picture at right).
