The name "Chalcatzingo" is of Náhuatl origin and it has three meanings "Place most prized by the Chalcas", "Venerated place of sacred water" or "Place of precious jades".
Chalcatzingo, located 120 kilometers southeast of Mexico City in the state of Morelos.
Chalcatzingo's numerous bas-relief carvings date to the Middle Formative Period, and because of the similarities in style and symbols to the sculptures and monuments on the Gulf Coast, a relationship between Chalcatzingo and the Olmec People seems to exist.

Chalcatzingo provides a unique opportunity to investigate the form and function of monumental architecture since it is the only known Central Mexican site with evidence of monumentality in the Early Formative Period (Grove, 1984; 1987; Grove et al., 1976).
The data yielded by the excavation of the platform mound was also used to examine theories of the rise of sociopolitical complexity at Chalcatzingo.

Founded in the mid-second millennium B.C., Chalcatzingo is among the most important early Olmec sites.
Despite its importance, Chalcatzingo, which has been poorly investigated, faces an uncertain future as its architectural remains continue to be harvested for modern building projects, and much of the archaeological zone is regularly overrun by cattle from an adjacent ranch.
Chalcatzingo will remain at risk, however, until plans are drafted for its long-term management and conservation.

At this site we found the sacred Amate tree which is used to produce paper.
This type of amate tree, popularly known as a “matapalo” (a stick killer), always surrounds the closest tree to it in what at first seems to be a loving or, at least, protective embrace, but later turns out to be a form of asphyxiation.
Here at Chalcatzingo, the amate trees (Ficus tecolutensis)which grow attached to the cliffs and exhibit a great flexibility are integral parts of the "sacred landscape".
