		Part of the large Chalchuapa site, Tazumal comprises a group of flat-topped stepped pyramids and is still being studied by historians.
		Located 78km from San Salvador on the outskirts of the city of Chalchuapa.
		El Salvador is the smallest and most densely populated Central American country, and the the only one without a coast on the Caribbean.

		The Maya ruins of Tazumal, considered the most important and best preserved in El Salvador, are in the town of Chalchuapa.
		In the Quiché language the name Tazumal means 'pyramid where the victims were burned.' The excavated ruins on display here are only one part of a zone covering 10 sq km (4 sq mi), much of it buried under the town.
		Chalchuapa is 76km (47mi) northwest of San Salvador, about a two hour ride by bus, usually via the town of Santa Ana.

		The broad summit of the volcano is cut by several crescentic craters, and a series of parasitic vents and cones have formed along a 20-km-long fissure system that extends from near the town of Chalchuapa NNW of the volcano to the San Marcelino and Cerro Chino cinder cones on the SE flank.
		The most active volcanoes overlie portions of the inclined seismic zone that are largely a seismic, but there are concentrations of seismic activity at intermediate depths located just up dip from these a seismic regions.
		The first inhabitants were Pokomanes, Lencas and Choitis follows later by Uluas and Pipiles who settled down in the western and central zones of the country, in the middle of the XI century.

	Visiting Other Archaeological Sites in El Salvador
		Casa Blanca is on the northern outskirts of Chalchuapa.
		One of the elaborate older tombs in the Chalchuapa cemetery.
		When you see the first sign indicating that you are entering Chalchuapa keep an eye out for the first road to the left leading off the highway and take it to a small Texaco gas station, at which a left turn will lead you straight to Tazumal.

		Just last month, when I visited Chalchuapa I had the honor of meeting Ana Ruth Hererra who is a mother of three and works with her partner as a farmer, coffee picker and cooperative member.
		It is one of the longest running co-ops in the Chalchuapa area and was formed in 1986 by a group of determined families who saw the land they lived on not being used by the landowner and organized to buy it.
		Through this bakery, women in the cooperative were given the chance to be involved in economic activities where they could sell the bread in the surrounding communities to make some money for themselves and their families.
