Chalfont St. Giles, with its duck pond, 18th century cottages and ancient High Street is a picturesque village on the edge of the Chilterns, 25 miles from London and roughly the same distance from Oxford.
According to the census of 1951 the population of Chalfont St. Giles was 4544.
Chalfont St Giles is "twinned" with the 'double' village of Graft-De Rijp, 14 miles north of Amsterdam in Holland.

Chalfont St Giles is a village in south east Bucks on the edge of the Chilterns, 25 miles from London, and near to Seer Green, Jordans, Chalfont St Peter, Little Chalfont and Amersham.
Chalfont means chalk spring, in reference to the water carrying capacities of the local terrain.
Chalfont St Giles is also the burial place of Bertram Mills and the birthplace of J.T. Hearne one of the greatest bowlers of the 1890s and 1900s, who also died here in 1944.

A station called Chalfont Road was opened in 1889 at the northernmost point of Chalfont St Giles Parish where the parishes of Amersham, Chenies, and Chalfont St Giles met.
The first appearance of the name Little Chalfont is in the minutes of the Chalfont St Giles Parish Council on 15 Jan 1925 when, at the request of the inhabitants, it was agreed that the group of houses near the station should be named Little Chalfont instead of "Chalfont Road Village".
Chalfont and Latimer station in Little Chalfont provides rail access to Central London via the Metropolitan Line and the Chiltern Line.

Such clearings in woodland on high ground will often be associated with ancient farms in the lower levels where the landholders came to clear woodland in the summer to provide pasture for their animals.

CHALFONT St Giles, once known as Ceadeles Funtan, dates back to Roman times, its parish church to Norman.
A narrow country lane, more woods and open country, then the right of way leads through a housing estate to the River Misbourne, today a healthy, gushing stream, in summer sometimes dried-out.
The two miles to Chalfont St Giles are easy walking across open meadows, with the promise of refreshment waiting in the village, where a visit to the home of John Milton, ‘one of the greatest Englishmen’, is recommended.
