Wright never shied from quality competition and fought bantamweight contenders Newsboy Brown and Pablo Dano, ex-champ Baby Arizmendi, featherweight contender Al Reid and three-division champ Henry Armstrong en route to the crown.
By 1941, Wright was ranked among the top featherweights in the world and secured a title fight by decisioning future champion Sal Bartolo.
Wright died tragically on August 12, 1957 in Los Angeles after slipping in the bathtub.

Wright successfully defended the title against former champion Harry Jeffra (TKO 10) on June 19, 1942, but lost his title on a decision to the legendary Willie Pep on November 20, 1942.
Wright served as a chauffeur and bodyguard for Mae West.

The American, born Guglielmo Papaleo, had suffered from Alzheimer's disease for five years and had been living in a nursing home in his home state of Connecticut.
Pep beat Chalky Wright in 1942 to win the title and held the belt for six years.
He memorably met Sandy Saddler four times, losing the first in 1948, regaining his title the next year, losing again in 1950 and failing in a bid to win back his crown in 1951 when a bad cut forced a stoppage.
