 The Chesapeake Challenge Cup
The Cup is the result of a brainstorming session between Jerry Keker of the National Institutes of Health Chess Club in Bethesda and myself.
Although the Chesapeake Challenge Cup trophy was bought and paid for by NIH and FMCA, and is currently held by FMCA, it belongs to all the players of the Chesapeake region.
No club may challenge for the Cup twice in a row, and a club which has just lost the Cup may not be the next challenger to get it back, unless they are the only challengers that can be found.

The State Cup Commissioner has the authority to direct that a match be played, at either a home field, a visiting field, or at a neutral location, if the home team cannot secure a field or if it is determined that the two teams cannot agree on a date and time for the match.
The State Cup Commissioner is under no obligation to accommodate any team's unique scheduling request and may have to schedule a match on a weeknight to ensure that the competition moves forward.

The Philadelphia Challenge Cup was first awarded to John B. (Jack) Kelly by the Schuylkill Navy after he returned in 1920 from Brussels, Belgium where he was the first American to win the single sculls race in Olympic competition, defeating Jack Beresford, Jr.
The 1952 Olympics were held in Helsinki, Finland and the single scull race and title to the Philadelphia Challenge Cup were won by Jurij Tjukalov of the U.S.S.R. Jack Kelly was second to Tjukalov in the heat and was beaten in the repechage by Kocerka of Poland.
The latest evidence of the Cup's presence found to date is a photograph in the Philadelphia Bulletin, Sunday, September 24, 1950, showing the victorious Mervyn Wood holding the Cup.
