Midnight Eye review: Zatoichi (2003, Takeshi KITANO)
Today, as a genre, chambara is as deeply unfashionable as the Western movie is now in America.
It was at her insistence that Kitano agreed to take on the project as a homage to the original Zatoichi actor, a former personal friend of hers.
Rather than the elaborately orchestrated poetic sequences of the archetypal chambara piece (excepting a memorable scene of carnage played out on a beach in the pouring rain), the violence is generally sporadic, clean and sharp, with the blood-letting rendered as computer-generated spurts.

CHAMBARA - A SITE DEDICATED TO THE BEST OF MARTIAL ARTS MOVIES FROM AROUND THE WORLD
Chambara prospered in the 1960s and 1970s, with the lust for violence and sex growing increasingly fast, bloody and explicit films as Kobayashi's “Seppuku” (1962), led to the development of Ero-gro, a sadistic sub-genre of sexual horror films, epitomized by Kaneto Shindo's Onibaba (1964) and Teruo Ishii's “Joys of Torture” (1968).
Such physical grace allows the Chambara actor to not only perform feats involving rolls, springs and flips, it also enables them to adapt to their surroundings, using walls, tables, chairs and other inanimate objects as improvisational props that can be used during the application of the acrobatic technique.
Although the Chambara actor must be skilled with a number of weapons, it is not uncommon for them to choose a specific weapon that they will use during all aspects of their training.

ASIAN POP The Return of 'Zatoichi' / Sharpen your swords, because 'Kill Bill' was only the beginning of the samurai ...
Chambara -- which peaked in the '60s and '70s -- generally replays the downward spiral of Japan's samurai past, when the warrior class gradually lost power to the rising merchant class under Tokugawa rule (circa 1598-1868).
The latest installment also throws in a pair of vengeful geishas (one of whom is in drag), a feisty farm worker, her gambling-addicted sad-sack nephew and a mentally deficient neighbor who runs around screaming in a loincloth and carrying a spear in his daily preparation to become a samurai.
Chambara seems to be on the rise, and, for the wandering samurai, it perhaps signals a call back into action.

Violence, East and West: The Last Samurai
In his last picture, after a score of chambara where sword-skill was the only hope for survival, Misumi opts for an ironic twist in The Last Samurai: characters must either perish or accept that, as Sugi proclaims, “it's no longer the age of the sword”.
Shintaro Katsu's last appearance in chambara was as the hapless, drunken ronin “Bull” Goemon in the flaccid remake of Ronin-gai (Kazuo Kuroki, 1990).
This is not a reference to the spate of martial arts or kung-fu films from a variety of Asian producers, films whose often contemporary setting and always clear-cut oppositions of good-and-evil never probed an era, a social structure, or an expressive tradition in the manner of the best samurai films.

In addition to the normal Chambara dodges, practitioners of "Anything Goes" often leap to attack, trading blows with their opponents in mid-jump; demonstrations of incredible "hang time" is common during such battles.
