Baytown is a city located along the Gulf Coast region in the U.S. state of Texas within the Houston–Sugar Land–Baytown Metropolitan Area.
In 1916, the Humble Oil and Refining Company, founded by Ross S. Sterling and his associates, built the first offshore drilling operation in Texas (second in the United States).
The plant was later closed in July 1986 due to a poor economic climate and the decline of American steel in the 1980s.
