 About Robert Chambers
Robert Chambers were born into a relatively prosperous, mill-owning family in the Scottish Borders, and much of their childhood was passed during time of war with the French.
Robert Chambers had shown an enthusiastic interest in the history and antiquities of Edinburgh and his first literary effort, Traditions of Edinburgh, published in-house in 1824, won him the approval and the personal friendship of Sir Walter Scott, and remains in print to this day.
The Book of Days, Robert Chambers’ last publication, and perhaps his most elaborate, was a miscellany of popular antiquities associated with the calendar, and many, especially his family, believed that his excessive labor in connection with this book hastened his death.

Chambers has always prided itself on the range of vocabulary which it contains, a range that is almost certainly wider than any other dictionary of its size.
It is unsurprising that Chambers has become the official Scrabble dictionary, or that it is prized by people whose passion is word games, crossword puzzles or the history of the language.
If you want an all-round dictionary, with good coverage of both the historical and the modern language, and are happy with its idiosyncrasies, then this new edition of Chambers is a worthwhile choice.

 The Chambers Dictionary
Chamber's Twentieth Century Dictionary was first published in 1901, under the industrious editorship of Thomas Davidson.
The dictionary was to become the recommended source for crossword puzzles because of the inclusion of obsolete, dialectical and Scottish words in its extensive lexicon.
Dictionary fans loved the quirky and individualistic definitions which were started by Davidson and continued by later editors.

Chambers Dictionary of Etymology is not a purchase I am glad to have made.
I had the chance to compare the Chambers Dictionary of Etymology with the Oxford Dictionary of Etymology, and I have to say that although both books are way ahead of the competition, for me, the Oxford seemed to go into greater depth.
While the Chambers Dictionary of Etymology is a very clear and concise work, I feel the Oxford Dictionary of Etymology has a slight advantage in precision and depth.

In fact it was war with the French which brought about a change in the family fortunes, and turned the Chambers brothers from middle-class lads receiving a grammar-school education, into poverty-stricken boys who had to leave school and work to support their family.
The Chambers family was ruined, and in 1813 the family left Peebles for Edinburgh.
A larger version of this dictionary, Chambers’s English Dictionary, was published in 1872, (with a second edition in 1898); Chambers’s Biographical Dictionary was published in 1897; and a compact edition of the English dictionary, Chambers’s Twentieth Century Dictionary, in 1901.

 Reviews: Chambers Dictionary of Etymology
Chambers have added the book to their stable of works on the language that includes the idiosyncratic and famous Chambers Dictionary and the Chambers 21st Century Dictionary, a new edition of which has also just come out.
The Chambers Dictionary of Etymology is different on both counts—it is reasonably priced, and it is written in a way that is easy to consult without losing its scholarly integrity.
Interestingly, the pricing is such that it is now cheaper to buy the Chambers edition than the original H W Wilson one, even in North America; the original is priced there at $64.00, but the Chambers edition has a list price of $45.00 and is widely discounted from online bookstores (Amazon.com is quoting $31.50).

The most popular single-volume dictionary for compilers of UK advanced cryptics, thanks to its large vocabulary: this results from the inclusion of historical and dialect words as well as current English; the Edinburgh-based lexicographers have preserved the many quirky words and definitions that have endeared it to solvers over the years.
Chambers includes very few proper names, so an "encyclopaedic dictionary" like this one is a useful complement.
Unlike some crossword dictionaries, the various answers for each indicator word are classified by length; as you often know an answer length exactly or approximately, this helps narrow down the possiblities quickly.

There is no digital version of The Chambers Dictionary, so I could not compare the hit rate of CH21 with that, but I am sure it would have fared significantly better than CH21 because the spectrum of words has always been its forte, including the less mainstream words.

Salon Wanderlust | Mallemaroking runs amok
I understand that there may be some innocents who, not being entirely proficient in the English tongue, remain blissfully unaware of what, precisely, mallemaroking is. And I readily accept that the word is one of the more curious to have crept into the English language.
It came, said Chambers, from the obsolete Dutch noun mallemerok, which means a foolish, romping woman.
For now that I have examined the relevant page of the latest Chambers Dictionary, a volume that came out some weeks ago and was hastily air-speeded to me in New York, I note that the worst has indeed happened.
