CHAMOLI (UP), March 29 (PTI, UNI) — At least 100 persons were killed and nearly 300 injured as a severe earthquake rocked the northern India causing widespread devastation in Chamoli and adjoining Rudraprayag districts of Uttar Pradesh in the early hours of today, according to official reports.
The latitude of the Chamoli quake was 30.2 degree North and the longitude was 79.5 degree East.
The epicentre of the quake was in Chamoli District.

Chamoli, a hamlet of about 100-odd houses with over 1500 residents nestling on the banks of the Alaknanda, today presents a scene of devastated walls, collapsed roofs and badly damaged civic amenities.

A new stillness enveloped the Garhwal hills today as bodies were cremated and massive relief operations were in progress after the devastating earthquake on Sunday night killed as many as 110 people and injured 350 others.
Nearly 750 houses were damaged in Tehri, 200 in Chamoli, and 2,000 in Rudraprayag district as per preliminary estimates.
Chamoli Development Council president Anand Singh Rawat said most of the houses damaged were those not supported by columns.

About 30,000 people who lost their houses in the earthquake that rocked Rudraprayag, Chamoli and Tehri districts on March 28, 1999, are yet to receive the meager Rs.
Of this, the owners of about 150 houses have got three installments of the aid while the fourth is yet to be paid.
The nearly 24,000 families, whose houses were damaged but fell short of the ``fully damaged'' definition, will however not receive even the paltry aid that has been promised to those whose houses were totally destroyed, it was said.
