Champasak is also well known for mat-mii silks and cottons that are hand-woven with tie-dyed threads, a short day trip from Pakse can be arranged to Ban Saphai, a renowned weaving village 15 km north of town along the route 13.
Two NBCA (Natural Biodiversity Conservation Area) are located in Champasak, Dong Hua Sao in the northern part of the province and Xe Pian, one of the most interesting NBCA under the natural point of view, with its remote southern border shared with Cambodia.

Champasak was once, 1400 years ago, the centre of power in the lower Mekong basin, later a revered outpost of the Khmer Angkor empire and, later still, one of the three kingdoms to rule over the remains of Lane Xang.
A fine heritage that, according to the last prince of Champasak, was brought to hard times by a former queen's indiscretion.
Though the Kingdom of Champasak prospered for a while after the final dissolution of Lane Xang, at the beginning of the 18th century of its fortunes faltered quickly and it was reduced to a vassal state of Siam before the century had passed.

When we were about to leave Champasak it was at the end of the dry season in May. As our van took us through a small village on our way to the ferry landing, we came upon a wild scene in the rice fields.
A leisurely stroll through the Champasak village we were greeted with smiles and phanom - a prayer-like placing together of the palms in front of the face or chest (similar to wai in Thailand).

The original temple was built in the 5th or 6th century by the Khmer Hindus at the top of a hill resembling a Shiva Phallus at the site of a fresh water spring.
From Champasak, a tuk tuk can be taken to the temple, about 8km away.
Situated in northeast Champasak, this fertile plateau covers parts of Salavan, Attapeu and Sekong provinces although there are more options for tourists visiting the plateau from Pakse.

It is not difficult to continue downriver to Khong Island from Champasak if you wish to stop overnight and enjoy the ruins of Wat Phu at your leisure.

Champasak, a tiny village which was once the seat of Lao royalty, is the kind of place that makes the rest of the world seem very far away.
These days, little is left of Champasak's former glory, but it remains the gateway to Wat Phu Champasak, an ancient Khmer religious complex dating from the sixth century.
Each block of sandstone or intricately carved pavilion is a marker to the grand plan of its creators, but it is the view from the top-most level which makes you realise how perfectly symmetrical the ruins are.

Considered the most sacred religious site in Southern Laos, the temple site of Wat Phu Champasak dates back to the Chenla Period (6th to 8th centuries) and was later part of the Khmer Angkor Empire (9th to 13th centuries).
Although the surviving structures are not as grand as those near Siem Reap, Cambodia, the surrounding countryside makes a visit to Wat Phu well worth a stop for serious temple buffs and casual travelers alike.
The temple site is located 8km southwest of the tiny village of Champasak and we feel that the best way to visit the site is by bicycle.

Pakse has a number of comfortable places to stay and is a good base from which to explore the surrounding area.
Within Pakse is the Champasak Museum where you can see relics from Wat Phu as well as from the Bolaven Plateau.

Champasak is a nice place for a riverside lunch.
Plenty of buses/songthaews pass through Champasak from 6 to 8 and took an hour to return to main market in Champasak (8k KIP).
But as it is coming from another village, it is usually full when it arrives and should take a long time to cross the river so you might wish to take one from Ban Muang instead (a few between 6 and 7am, K3000).

Travellers should be prepared to spend longer in this province than expected, merely because of the excellent hospitality of the locals, but also due to the rather slow pace of public transportation as Champasak has good roads, but as in much of Laos, the public transportation that runs along them is creaking.
Champasak province has good roads, so if you know how to ride a motorbike this is an alternative means of transport worth considering.

You can take a boat down and stay in Champasak for the Wat Phu ruins or hire a tuk-tuk out of Pakse for the 1/2 day excursion which puts you on a neat little ferry to taxi the vehicles and people across the river.
There are a few accom in Champasak where you could stay and rent a bike to get to the ruins.
I think there is only 1 that goes back in the afternoon and it is on the early side so you will probably have to stay in Champasak overnight unless you hire a tuktuk back to Pakse.

I visited Champasak in 1996 with my family who are originally from there, from a little village called Ban Dou.
From there we drove to my mother's village which is about twenty to thirty minutes and is located on the main road, which its name has escaped me. Unfortunately we did not see Vat Phou or toured the main city of Champasak, but stayed in the countryside.
It's so beautiful there, the sky is so blue and the clouds are so white and puffy and at night the stars are endless, because there are no bright city lights to shadow them.
