Music with Bob Duskis - Week of February 6, 2004   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-01)
Champeta music has been described as "what happens when West Africa gets reintroduced to the once-upon-a-slave-trade Caribbean coastline of Colombia." In the late '70s, West African sailors passed through the heavily African port cities of Cartagena and Barranquilla armed with LPs of soukous, highlife and Afro-beat.
The African sound soon met up with the Latin sound and champeta's "Colombiafrica" fusions of cumbia and highlife, merengue and soukous were born.
Because champeta is defiantly fl music on a continent that still defiantly denies and suppresses its fl roots, the scene's zealous embrace of pan-African "flness" has kept it in the Colombian underground.

DUSKIS: And basically what happened, Diana, is, in the late '70s, West African sailors went to the African port cities of Cartagena and Baranquilla in Colombia and they brought with them their music, their records, their soukous, their highlife, their Afrobeat.
And, interestingly enough, there is a very political element to it, Diana, because champeta is described as defiantly fl music.

Batata and his excellent band specialise in son palenquera and champeta, and may already have come to your attention through the inclusion of the track Ataole on the "Champeta Criolla Vol.
That CD focussed largely on Cartagena's sound system based form of champeta, a newish hybrid style which cannibalises pan-African and indigenous Colombian influences, spicing them up with mucho shouting and sometimes irritating use of trashy effects.

The now-booming (or near-famous) cousin of hardcore hip-hop, reggaeton is a relatively new kind of dance music that originated in Panama but has become popular in Puerto Rico over the last decade.
Taken from the Jamaican reggae music that influenced its beat, reggaeton was also heavily shaped by other Puerto Rican music genres, the urban scene in the United States and, to a certain extent, the Colombian champeta.
What Puerto Ricans brought to the mix was house music (itself a fusion of salsoul and disco) and straight up rap.
