It is said that in the study of Mizo history, it starts from Champhai and ends at Chmphai.Since it is situated at the border, trade also flourished and is one of the most important trade centre in the state.
Champhai is proud of its grape production throughout the state for it is said that Champhai grape tastes better than any other region could produce.

Aizawl May 22: A woman (name withheld) who recently moved to Lunglei from Champhai has approached the Aizawl-based Human Rights and Law Network to seek redressal against YMA activities that has banned her son-in-law from working in his fields as well as staying in his village.
Talking to HR and LN members on Saturday, the woman said the YMA members of Tuipui village, located twenty km from Champhai towards Aizawl, has hounded her son-in-law and his family out of the village and destroyed his home after the YMA found a small amount of liquor in his possession.
However, on the instigation of Tuipui YMA, Champhai Venglai YMA has refused to let the son-in-law stay even in his parents house saying he needed to ask forgiveness from the Tuipui YMA first.

 Chief Minister of  Mizoram
During 1954, when he was compelled by circumstances to join middle school in a neighboring village, he was very hesitant as he was then still very young and non of his friends from his village were there to keep company.
He finished his high school at Champhai from Samthang village, and in 1960 his family shifted to Champhai.
It was in 1961 that he passed his matriculation, but he could not join college as the family was too poor to finance his further education.

On tour of chief minister Zoramthanga’s constituency Champhai last week, Hawla said it was because they were given a nod by the chief minister that Zomi Revolutionary Organisation and members of its armed wing are active in the state, specially in and around Champhai constituency which borders Manipur.
In his capacity as the opposition leader with the rank of a cabinet minister, Lal Thanhawla called a meeting of district government officials during his tour at Champhai town where he instructed the deputy commissioner to look into allegations that development funds were not being handed over to village councils.
Hawla also expressed his concern that apart from the six Congress village councils within Champhai district that the MNF government had dissolved without proper justification, plans were afoot to dissolve more Congress dominated village councils.

Aizawl June 27: The population of Champhai district is ready to agitate on a massive scale if the important bridges linking them to the rest of the state are not upgraded.
Speaking over the telephone today, Champhai deputy commissioner Lallungmuana said the bridges connecting the district to the rest of the state are now in dilapidated condition and hardly sufficient to bear the burden of the district's needs.
The difficulty, however, remains in the fact that these plans would need at least another three or four more years for fruition while the need for upgradation is urgent.

Aizawl June 27: A report reaching here said the police were, after all, unable to return the 36 foreigners slated to be pushed back to Myanmar on Saturday night at the nearest border post because of obstruction from the Champhai group YMA.
A senior police officer here today said the Group YMA activists, led by the secretary V.L. Chama Hnamte, had strongly requested the police at the border post of Zokhawthar village not to hand over the foreign nationals, specially the 11 Chin rebels, as they faced certain death at the hands of the Myanmar army authorities.
Champhai SP F. Lalhuliana, while speaking over the telephone today, confirmed this story but said the foreigners were being returned to their home country.
