Championship Auto Racing Teams, or CART for short was sanctioned and held its first race in 1979 at the Phoenix Motor Speedway.
CART's main proponent was Dan Gurney, a team owner who decided that the loose association of team owners, drivers, and race promoters needed to be strengthened.
CART is successful until the early 1990's when Tony George, the owner of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, lobbied for significant changes within the series.

From 1956 to 1978 the championship was sanctioned by the United States Automobile Club (the USAC), a body formed by the then-owner of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, Tony Hulman.
In 1979 there were two championships run by two sanctioning bodies, USAC and CART (Championship Auto Racing Teams), which was a body formed by most of the existing team-owners.
The exceptions are the 1981 and 1982 races, which were removed from the CART championship for political reasons by the USAC.
